Bears Crocs Giveaway Winner
Thanks to the many loyal readers that participated in the Bears Crocs giveaway. I had a lot of funny entries as a caption to the photo below. Here are a few of my favorites: In retrospect, staying at the Blue Lagoon with a naked Brooke Shields would probably have been a better career choice. Santa’s got a package for you. After playoff loss, Vikings looking to replace Viking horn with kinder gentler flute. Detroit fans celebrate first victory in streets, sending Marinelli to Bears. Bandanas…protection for your brat and potatoes that you can believe in. I didn’t know that Jerry [...]
Lovie Smith goes “All In”
The Bears filled out the remainder of their coaching staff today, hiring Jon Hoke as Secondary Coach. “Who is coaching the linebackers ?” you might ask. Bob Babich, that’s who. Babich will return to his familiar role as linebackers coach and keep his duties as Defensive Coordinator, but Lovie Smith will take over calling the defensive signals on game day. As reported by Brad Biggs in his Inside the Bears blog on www.suntimes.com: Smith will handle play-calling duties this coming season with Bob Babich remaining the defensive coordinator while returning to his roots as the team’s linebackers coach. The staff [...]
Chicago Branch of Dungy Coaching Tree
Lovie Smith’s close friend and mentor Tony Dungy announced his retirement as Head Coach of the Indianapolis Colts on Monday. Dungy gave Smith his first NFL coaching experience when he hired him as a Linebackers coach for Tampa Bay. The close friends crossed paths in an historic matchup in Super Bowl XLI, when Dungy became the first African-American Head Coach to win a Super Bowl. Lovie’s comments from the Chicago Bears website: “I’m happy for Tony and his family, but sad for our league because we are losing one of the all-time great coaches,” Smith said. “He is one of [...]
Whatch U Talkin’ ‘Bout Willis?!?
Apparently Steelers’ backup QB Byron Leftwich would like to join the Bears’ QB mix next season. As reported by Brad Biggs in the Chicago Sun Times, Leftwhich was quoted saying: ”We are in the playoff run right now, so I don’t even want to go there, but tell them to look me up,” Leftwich said. ”I’m a fan of Lovie Smith, I’ll just say that. I thought that was where I was going to go in the beginning. I remember hoping that I would go there. I just wanted to be a part of the tradition, the history of the [...]
Super Bowl, here we come!
Make your airfare and hotel reservations for Miami for next February now Bears fans. As reported by Vaugh McClure in the Chicago Tribune, Rod Marinelli has accepted the Bears offer as assistant head coach/defensive line coach. In case you’ve been living under a rock, Marinelli was the head coach for a historic team this past season. He guided the Detroit Lions to an NFL first-ever 0-16 season. Lovie and Marinelli were both position coaches under Tony Dungy in Tampa Bay. In fairness to the Bears, Marinelli is regarded as a great defensive line coach and had long been on Lovie’s [...]
LOWER THE BOOM!!!
I”ve had some computer issues which have delayed my usual Thursday posting of Lower the Boom. In the spirit of the Holidays, I decided not to Lower the Boom on anyone over the last couple of weeks, but the calendar has turned to 2009 and it’s time to take someone to task. By the way, check out the new logo for this segment that Santa brought me. Pretty sweet, huh? I had a few different topics in my sights over the last couple of weeks, but this one was just too perfect. In her Tuesday Chicago Sun Times column, Carol [...]
Playoff Preview – Divisional Round
I enter this weekend having gone 2-2 in last weekend’s games, hitting with the Cards and Eagles and missing on the Ravens and Chargers. Chargers were by far the biggest surprise for me with the ‘Lightening Bug’ Darren Sproles leading the Bolts past the Colts. The Ravens were most impressive with a thorough beat-down of the Phins. The Divisional Round of the playoffs features four re-matches from earlier this season. Baltimore at Tennessee Last meeting: The Titans edged the Ravens 13-10 when the teams met back in October. Rookie QB Joe Flacco’s second interception proved costly late in the 4th [...]
