Bears fans, let’s play a little game called Would You Rather? A lot has been made recently about the alleged availability of disgruntled Denver QB Jay Cutler. I have been among many that have called for the Bears and Jerry Angelo to put together a “whatever it takes” package to go get a 26-year old Pro Bowl-caliber quarterback entering the prime of his career. Sure, he’s acting like a diva with the way new Head Coach Josh McDaniels handled the Matt Cassel situation, but I seem to recall a certain “Punky QB” that roamed the sidelines in the 80′s that had a bit of an attitude too. … [visit site to read more]

Mock Draft – Andre Smith?

I was participating in a Fansided Network Mock Draft today and had to make a tough decision. I don’t want to steal my own thunder with whom I selected, but Alabama OT Andre Smith, once thought to be a possibility as the #1 overall selection, was sitting there at #18 when I had my Jerry Angelo hat on. I called my long-time guy Louie and asked, “Do I dare?” He responded with a resounding “HELL NO! He’s a fatter, lazier Stan Thomas!” Here’s the scarier question: what if this happens in real life (as opposed to fake life) and Andre Smith is there for the Bears in the first round? What should they do?

For those not in fully in the know, let me give you some background on Smith. He was an absolute beast of a left tackle at Alabama. He used his massive 6’4″ 330 pound frame to maul his opponents as easily as he mauled through the Old Country Buffet . The number of his collegiate awards and honors (15 according to Wikipedia) nearly equals his Wonderlic score (17 for those taking my the Wonderlic here). Most notably he was awarded the 2008 Outland Trophy, honoring the best lineman in college football. That puts him in the company of Orlando Pace, Jonathan Ogden and Joe Thomas; not too shabby.

Things started to go off the rails for Smith on December 29, 2008 when he was suspended for Alabama’s Sugar Bowl game for allegedly being in contact with an agent other than his own. The Tide were upset by the Utah Utes 30-17. Matters worsened for Smith when he essentially blew off the NFL Scouting Combine, showing up out of shape and declaring that he wouldn’t work out. NFL owners have passed 4 new rules to bolster “player safety” and modified another rule that will be known hereafter as the “Tom Brady” rule.   From the nfl.com article:

» The initial force of a blindside block can’t be delivered by a helmet, forearm or shoulder to an opponent’s head or neck. An illegal blindside block will bring a 15-yard penalty.

» Initial contact to the head of a defenseless receiver also will draw a 15-yard penalty. “Our clear movement is to getting out of the striking in the head area,” Pereira said. “We’re reading about injuries that say spinal and vertebrae. We’ve got to try something.”

» On kickoffs, no blocking wedge of more than two players will be allowed. A 15-yard penalty will go to a violating team.

» Also on kickoffs, the kicking team can’t have more than five players bunched together pursuing an onside kick. Breaking this rule would draw a 5-yard penalty. … [visit site to read more]

Chicago Bears GM Jerry Angelo was spotted doing cartwheels at the news that the Bears were awarded three additional picks in the upcoming NFL Draft.
