Stone - that's exactly the wrong way to look at it. The Bears need to go big or go home. There is no sense hiring some unknown coordinator. Go out and get one of these top tier guys (Cowher, Shannahan, Holmgren) and do it up right.

If a public institution of higher learning can dump a worthless tub of goo (Here come the Irish) then a professional football team with HUGE TV contracts and corporate sponsorships not to mention big PSL $$'s can pop a few million on a real coach. We paid Cedric Benson how many millions to do nothing here but whine and be hurt? It's time we hold the organization to a higher standard!

The bottom line on Lovie is that he has screwed up the side of the ball that he's supposed to know best - defense. I don't know if Rivera was any damn good or not but it's clear that the Babich promotion was a mistake. Even Lovie realized this and took over play calling. And now that he's in charge our D is at the bottom of the barrel. It isn't all Urlacher's absence. There's a clear correlation between Lovie's involvement and the defensive decline. And let's not forget who pushed for Adam Frick'n Archuletta. So we've got a situation where we can question a) his player evaluation b) his play calling ability, and c) his evaluation of his assistant coaches. And that's on the side of the ball he's supposed to "know".

As for Cowher, I have to doubt that the Bears will pay Lovie AND pay big bucks to a marquee coach. If we get someone, and I think we do need someone else, it will be a mid-shelf hire.

I agree this is exactly the way to go, but it is this kind of logical move that will never happen as long as the McCaskeys are in charge...no disrespect to the matriarch, Ginny.

After all, didn't we give up a second round pick for a WR playing defensive end (Mr. Adams).

Bill Cowher would be a PERFECT fit in Chicago. He is a tough, no nonsense guy - a personification of Chicago Bears defense, and a run-the-ball-down-their-throat kind of guy. I like Lovie Smith but Ron Turner and that whole offensive staff need to go. The offensive line hasn't been good in a long time. They brought Pep Hamilton over from SF to be the QB coach. He couldn't do anything with any of their QB's and now we have a pro bowl QB and he looks worse than Alex Smith. I don't see Lovie Smith giving them the boot after the year is over, which means the entire staff should be vacating their offices. And as far as the defense is concerned, Lovie's big mistake was letting Ron Rivera go to the Chargers and promoting Bob Babich to defensive coordinator. My how things change...
