Chicago Bears Week 11 Report Card

AUTHOR: | IN: Game Notes, Uncategorized | COMMENTS: 4 Comments

The Chicago Bears played one of their most complete games of the season in beating the Chargers 31-20, but Cutler  breaking his thumb and being lost for the season almost negates the effort.  The Bears offensive line gave up zero sacks for the second time this season, the defense forced three turnovers, Hester was running wild on returns and the receivers were actually catching the ball.  Chargers WR Vincent Jackson did have seven catches for 165 yards and the defensive didn’t register a sack, but a win’s a win. Hopefully, the many positives that came out of the game are [...]

Previewing Bears’ Final 6 Games and Road to Playoffs without Cutler

AUTHOR: | IN: Bears | COMMENTS: 3 Comments

Climb down off that ledge Chicago Bears fans.  Just climb down and we can talk about this logically and intelligently. If you’re a regular reader of this blog, you know this much about me, I am far from a glass half full, Bears Kool Aide swilling fan.  I will tell it to you straight.  The 2011 season is far from over. I can’t remember a victory Monday in Chicago filled with as much doom and gloom as today.  There’s no denying that losing Cutler for “significant time” after the Bears’ 31-20 win over the Chargers is a blow, but let’s [...]

Thumbs Down: Bears Confirm Cutler Surgery, Miss Significant Time

AUTHOR: | IN: Injuries | COMMENTS: None Yet

The Chicago Bears have confirmed that Jay Cutler has a fractured thumb on his right (throwing) hand that will require surgery to repair. “Jay does have a right thumb fracture,” Smith said on WBBM. “We took X-rays last night and he’ll be seeing a specialist this morning and we’ll be able to tell you a little bit more after that.” The Bears coach declined to provide a timetable for Cutler’s return. “I’m not going to play doctor right now,” Smith said. “We’re going through the process. We will be able to tell you a little bit more [later]. That’s all [...]

Bears Outlast Chargers in Costly 31-20 Win

AUTHOR: | IN: Game Notes | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

Every silver lining has a dark cloud.  The Bears’ silver lining is a 31-20 win over the San Diego Chargers to extend their winning streak to 5 games and improve their record to 7-3.  The dark cloud?  You mean besides long snapper Patrick Mannelly’s knee injury?  Jay Cutler broke the thumb on his throwing hand and is rumored to miss the rest of the regular season.  No official word from the Bears yet on the extent of the injury.   (This is when I wish I had finished my post-game writeup before I heard this news, because it’s a major buzz [...]

AUTHOR: | IN: Injuries | COMMENTS: None Yet

It’s a collective gasp from Bears fans, as quarterback Jay Cutler reportedly suffered a broken thumb on his right hand which may require season ending surgery.  The Chicago Tribune’s Vaughn McClure is reporting via multiple sources that the injury will sideline Cutler for 6-8 weeks, which would essentially end his season unless the Bears can continue rolling and extend their season into mid-January.  The Bears do not plan to put Cutler on IR. Cutler suffered the injury when he was blocked trying to make the downfield tackle on his intercepted throw intended for Johnny Knox.   Check out the replay of [...]

Handicapping NFL Week 11: Picks of the Week

AUTHOR: | IN: Uncategorized | COMMENTS: None Yet

There are seven weeks to go and playoffs, and I’m not liking where I’m at after these last three tough weeks.  However, as an educator, I’m always promoting teachable moments.  So, I’m going to use my 2-3 week last week as a teachable moment, particularly to people like my brother.  When picking games and commiting to one team or another in writing, you subject yourself to “I told you so’s” or “Are you crazy?”  The funny thing about it is that those statements tend to come after the games from your critics.  Comments like, “I knew that Denver was going [...]
