Mr. Pickles, you hit the nail on the head, and I've been shouting it for years. Angelo only lasted so long because he understood the McCaskeys' monetary objectives and played the part. He saved them a ton of money by continually "building" the team with mediocre players and trading away high draft picks, and he got to keep his job despite sub-par team performance year after year. It was pretty obvious during the coaching search two years ago that coaches do not consider Chicago to be a desirable job, and DeCosta's opinions seem to suggest the same for GMs. My conclusion...the Bears will continue to disappoint until Virginia dies. At that point, due to changes in NFL rules since the McCaskeys took ownership in the 80s, the team will be forced to find a majority owner. It is my sincere hope that the team will change ownership shortly after, and that the new owner will be motivated by super bowls and not finances.

Pickles, it's the same Bear story. They'll conduct a few non urgent "interviews" and realize that Ruskell is perfect for the job once Lovie feels like the charade is complete.

Remember, Lovie was the 16th rated defensive coordinator when we hired him, not some savant. Somehow, despite failing to develop players or make any gametime adjustments, he not only keeps his job, but hires his own boss. And who could that be.....?

Ruskell is perfect. Came from a failing franchise (Martz, Marinelli) and will be subordinate to Lovie. Then Lovie can draft to his antiquated "scheme" and our development and most importantly, Jay Cutlers development will be squandered with cheap moves.

DeCosta also comes from the Ravens and I'm not sure why Bear management would think he would have a positive view of the team after last years trade debacle at the draft. Amateur hour with purse strings like chastity belts and saddled with a dead coach.

Like Martz and Marinelli ( and now TIce), Ruskell will be the only one who wants our job.

Shame of shames.

Stop patronizing this team Chicago. If Family Night wasn't enough proof, this transition and hire serves only one purpose, to save the Mc Caskey's money.

Any other owner would have cleaned house.

Pathetic. Can't wait to see Lovie in the draft room..... not.

Why the he'll would DeCosta be the top candidate? I understand his reputation but he's turned down numerous GM offers in the past and dude has got it pretty good in Baltimore. Makes me think of this past offseason when the only free agent lineman they made a run at was Colon when every indication was that he was staying in Pittsburgh. Nice that the post Jerry era is off to a dramatically different start.

My next thought is admittedly based on conjecture but here goes. In that Forbes article, that was posted on this very blog a while back, that pointed out how mismanaged the Bears are Ted Phillips (I think but I'm too lazy to fact check right now) emphasized that the Bears are the sole source of income for the McCaskey's, unlike a lot of owners that made their money through other means and buy a football team for kicks and maybe some supplemental income. So they've got the money, sometimes they use it, but their motivation will never be to build a perennial contender, it will be to protect their profit margins. They'll splurge on the occasional Peppers and overpay a blocking TE at the insistence of a lunatic offensive coordinator but by and large they want to build a team on the cheap. I think that's why agents were grumbling last year about how difficult the Bears are to work with and that's why DeCosta would be concerned with budgetary issues.
