I cannot fathom how a group of "non-football guys" are supposed to pick a candidate that will achieve their stated goal of improving talent evaluation when none of them are familiar with what to look for in a football talent evaluator. I really think Ross was the guy here, he's a young guy with an already impressive resume and his star still looks to be rising. That being said I wondered if it was him who wasn't interested in the Bears since the sky is likely the limit for him and with the Bears there's the obvious constraint of having to inherit your first head coach and I assume some McCaskey imposed financial limitation on what he can do. Reading this though it seems like it was the Bears decision to no longer pursue him as a candidate, which I guess I shouldn't be surprised by. There were some good candidates and some terrible ones, not surprisingly it's looking like the job will go to someone in the middle, fitting to continue to trend of mediocrity.

OK, so I'm not the only one that thinks this interview process is a little weird. So did Marc Ross. From ESPN Chicago http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/bears/post/_/id/4674951/former-bear-shaffer-coaching-prospects:

Speaking of awkward: New York Giants college scouting director Marc Ross interviewed with the Bears last week, according to a source who described the process as “a little weird.” Ross met with Bears president Ted Phillips, senior director of football administration Cliff Stein and senior director of corporate communications Scott Hagel in one sitting, according the source, and later spoke with Smith. Perhaps what the source found “a little weird” was that Ross interviewed with only one “football guy” (Smith) throughout the process.
