Inside the Numbers on the Matt Forte Contract

Matt Forte finally got the long term deal that he’s been seeking.  Early reports have now been confirmed and the terms of Forte’s 4 year deal have been released.  Hit the jump to get a look inside the $32 million payday, per the Chicago Tribune.

While the contract has widely been described as a 4-year, $32 million deal, the base value of the deal is $28.1 million and only maxes out at $31.5 if he hits certain incentives.  Let’s look at the deal year by year:

2012 = $9.8 million

2013  = $6.3 million

2014 = $6.6 million

2015 = $7.8 million

That takes the total to $30.5 million over the first 4 years.  There is another $1 million in incentives out there which take the deal to the reported total of $31.5 million.
