Five down, just one to go for Cliff Stein and the Chicago Bears as second round draft pick, linebacker Jon Bostic, has agreed to terms on a four year contract. That leaves only first round pick Kyle Long left to be signed. That’s not entirely surprising; the New Orleans Saints just agreed to terms with Kenny Vaccaro, the first first round draft pick to be signed by any time.
I’m sure it’s just a matter of time before a deal is done and in fact, I’d be surprised if Long left town without a contract in his back pocket. Cliff Stein and the Bears set a goal of having all picks signed by mid-May and they look to be well on track for that.
As for Bostic, he’s ready to get to work playing alongside a perennial Pro Bowler in Lance Briggs, who’s reached out to the rookie:
"“He said he’s seen a little bit of film on me,” Bostic said. “He said he likes what he saw. He’s been in this defense a long time so he knows it like the back of his hand. Once I get up there, he wants me to get with him, and if I have any questions, make sure I’m asking him because they want to win. I know for quite a while defense has been one of the strong points of their team, and going into next year, it’s one thing I definitely want to carry over.“Really, it was just the thing of reaching out. Obviously, I’ve never met [Briggs] before, but for him to reach out to me and offer me any help that I need along this way, along this process, definitely told me that he’s going be there to help me get through all this and help me adjust to the next step.”"
While the Bears signed middle linebacker DJ Williams, I’d really like to see Bostic get in the mix. He is the future for the Bears, while Williams is little more than a stopgap.
Do you think Bostic will be able to make an immediate impact? Do you think there’s any way he can beat out Williams to start the season? Do you think he’ll finish the season as the starter?
