Josh McCown Signs with Cleveland Browns

The hope that the Chicago Bears and quarterback Josh McCown was quashed on Friday afternoon with Josh McCown agreeing to a three-year contract with the Cleveland Browns.  It’s an interesting move for both parties.  For the Browns, it pretty much assures that they’ll be parting ways with Brian Hoyer.  It also adds a solid citizen and respected veteran to mentor Johnny Manziel.

  • I’m not sure that even McCown can turn Manziel and his partying ways around short of an exorcism.  Jay Cutler heaped praise on McCown after he left, wishing that he’d met him earlier in his career.  Maybe Josh can work his magic with Johnny Football.

For McCown, it offers him a chance to compete for a starting job.  I’m not sure Manziel showed the Brown enough to earn anything more than a chance to compete, first round draft status notwithstanding.  McCown made a stop in Buffalo and many thought he’d ink with the Bills but the Browns made a strong pitch to lure him to Cleveland.

For the Bears, it keeps some mystery around the quarterback position.  The Bears sat down and had breakfast with Josh McCown at the Combine last week, sparking more rumors about a possible reunion.  Many fans thought that bringing McCown back might bring out the best in both him and Cutler, who both had down years once they split up last season.

I think McCown is a terrific locker room guy, but I just can’t understand the fascination with a 36-year old journeyman quarterback who has 17 career wins. McCown rode the magic carpet that was Marc Trestman’s offense in 2013, heaving the ball up to Alshon Jeffery and Brandon Marshall while filling in for an injured Cutler for a handful of games and throwing 13 touchdowns to just one interception.

Last season, despite having Rookie of the Year candidate wide receiver Mike Evans and Vincent Jackson on the Bucs, McCown could only muster a 1-10 record with 11 TD’s and 14 INT’s for a passer rating just north of 70.  Something tells me that Josh McCown and the Cleveland Browns are in for more tough times ahead.
