The Chicago Bears added a little backfield depth by signing former Atlanta Falcons running back Jacquizz Rodgers.  The 25-year old Rodgers spent his first four seasons with the Falcons after being drafted out of Oregon State in the fifth round of the 2011 NFL Draft.

Rodgers spent time splitting carries in the Atlanta backfield behind Steven Jackson and Michael Turner for the last few seasons.  It’s good that he’s used to riding shotgun because Matt Forte figures to run behind Matt Forte in the Bears offense.

Rodgers has appeared in 63 games in his 4-year career, including 5 starts. He’s compiled 305 carries for 1116 yards and 5 rushing TD’s.  In addition, he added 155 catches for 1104 yards and 5 receiving touchdowns.  Rodgers also has experience in the return games with 49 returns for nearly 1200 yards without any touchdowns.  He gave way to Devin Hester last season in primary return duties.

The Bears have been in need of a Robin to Forte’s Batman for several years now.  Rodgers joins the long line of Chester Taylor, Marion Barber and Michael Bush as veteran running backs who were supposed to complement Forte.  Most of those guys were supposed to be a short-yardage type of running back, but none amounted to much of anything behind Forte.

The 29-year old Forte is entering the last year of his contract.  It’s unclear whether the Bears will bring Forte back on another deal after this season.  They drafted Ka’Deem Carey last season but he saw limited action, so it’s anybody’s guess where he fits into the mix.  This season’s running back class is deep, so it’s possible the Bears could invest a pick to compete for carries.  Rodgers is on a 1-year deal, so it’s minimal risk for the Bears.
