The Chicago Bears announced Friday that Dave Ragone has been hired as the team’s new quarterback coach. Ragone will replace Dowell Loggains who was elevated to offensive coordinator and work primarily with him and Jay Cutler.

Loggains is familiar with Ragone. They worked together in Tennessee before last season and Loggains was instrumental in bringing Ragone to Chicago.

Ragone spent last season with the Washington Redskins as their offensive quality control coach and worked often with Kirk Cousins helping Cousins establish himself as a legitimate NFL quarterback and helping the Redskins reach the playoffs.

Ragone was a tremendous college quarterback at Louisville and was a third round pick by the Titans in the 2003 draft. Ragone’s professional career never mounted to much and he started getting involved in coaching about 6 or 7 years ago.

Ragone first gained notoriety among coaching ranks working with Josh McCown in the United Football League in 2010 when McCown was out of the NFL. He helped McCown refine his skills which got him back in the NFL in 2011 eventually finding a home with the Chicago Bears where he had his most success as an NFL QB.

The hiring of Ragone shows that John Fox continues to look for young, up and coming coaches while committing to the continuity that the team has been preaching on offense despite the departure of Adam Gase.

Loggains and Ragone have a critical year in front of them. As the Bears look to improve from their 2015 season, they will need Cutler to continue and build upon the success he had last season. Any regression from Cutler will be a gut punch to the Bears rebuilding process.

Time will tell if Ragone was the right hire but based on the tremendous coaching staff that John Fox has put together, he deserves every benefit of the doubt.
