The Chicago Bears have signed quarterback Mark Sanchez.

The Chicago Bears announced that they signed quarterback Mark Sanchez.

As a blogger, when you write articles like this, you have to try to keep something in mind. There are news pieces, and there are opinion pieces. When you need to write a news piece like this, the idea is to write an objective article and save the opinions for a different article. At least, that’s the idea.

You would sit down and write about how Sanchez spent last season with the Dallas Cowboys as a backup to Dak Prescott. You might mention that he was signed last offseason by the Denver Broncos and failed to make the roster. You might even slip in Sanchez’s time with the New York Jets and mention the butt fumble.

Speaking of the butt fumble:

Once you establish Sanchez’s recent resume, you discuss that he’s only a depth piece for the Bears’ quarterback position. You mention that it is still highly likely that the Bears add another quarterback in the draft. You also mention that Sanchez is probably only in competition with Connor Shaw for the QB2 or QB3 slot (depending on what QB the Bears take in the draft) and that he might not even make the roster.

At that point, the article should end.

As a blogger, writing a news piece, you should not let your own personal opinion ooze into the article. You should not mention that Sanchez hasn’t been a relevant quarterback since 2011. You should not mention that he’s already proven he can’t play quarterback at this level. You don’t mention the nonsense of adding a 30-year old quarterback to a rebuilding roster. You don’t mention that if you wanted to keep a washout quarterback that once played for USC, that you may as well have kept Matt Barkley.

More from Bear Goggles On

You certainly shouldn’t mention that the Chicago Bears have arguably the worst collection of quarterbacks of any team in the NFL (thank you San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns and New York Jets for allowing me to use the word ‘arguably’ and not ‘definitely’). You also don’t want to mention that despite Ryan Pace showing an excellent eye for talent in the draft, he has completely bungled the quarterback position, which is, of course, the most important position on the team.

Those are meant for opinion pieces. This is a news piece. But when you, as a blogger, just sat through a 3-13 season and a pathetic free agency period for the franchise, it’s rather difficult to even pretend to be objective.

Mark Sanchez has signed with the Chicago Bears.

Let that sink in.
