How did the Bears fare in the 2009 NFL Draft?

To spark up the offseason we are going to go back in time and regrade the Bears drafts of the past decade. Some will be a lot easier to grade than others but it will be a good exercise to look at recent history and compare it to what the team has and has not learned over its hits and misses. This edition, we will focus on the 2009 NFL draft.

The 2009 features the first year the Bears traded their first round pick for Jay Cutler. The Broncos made multiple trades with the assets given from the Bears. The overall trade turned into Jay Cutler and Johnny Knox for Robert Ayers, Kyle Orton, Richard Quinn, Seth Olsen, Demaryius Thomas, Tim Tebow, Eric Decker. It is tough to gauge just how valuable Cutler is versus that group of assets. It is also tough to say that the Bears would have been able to maneuver and pull off that group of players as well either. Either way, it looks like a fair deal on both sides on paper and does not completely diminish the Bears grade.

3. Jarron Gilbert, DT, San Jose State

The Bears traded down from the second round for an early third round pick and an early fourth round pick. The pick the Bears traded down from was Max Unger. The Bears drafted Gilbert and Henry Melton with their two picks. This trade will have to be chalked up as a loss. Gilbert played in the NFL for just three seasons and played in Chicago for one.

3. Juaquin Iglesias, WR, Oklahoma

Iglesias was a big miss for the Bears. He had good size but came from a pass happy offense with no finesse, and only appeared in one career NFL game.
