The New York Jets have released “quarterback” Tim Tebow. I’m not going to insult anyone’s intelligence by saying that I feel this is a big time move, yet of course it is the headline on NFL.com. So not that it should matter, but where will this moderately useless punt protector/backup quarterback go? There are several teams in need of a quarterback, and the Bears are one of those who need a solid backup. However, Tim Tebow is the last thing I would ever want to see in a Bears uniform.

I know that Tebow worked with Marc Trestman a few years ago and that his quarterbacking coach with the Jets was our current quarterback coach Matt Cavanaugh. This doesn’t mean being under them will make him succeed for the Bears. I don’t think Emery is going to sign him, but if he does, I will be mortified. If Jay Cutler were to get injured, the last person I would want to have step in would be Tim Tebow. Tim Tebow attracts way too much attention from the media, and I do not think someone like that is good for any team, especially the Chicago Bears. Most of the attention he gets isn’t really his fault; most of it is the media. For some reason, they are so fascinated by the fact that he was good in college and loves God. They even were intrigued by him back before he made all those comebacks in 2011. But I don’t really care what the media says about Tebow. I just would hate to see that man on the Bears. The only thing it would do is cause problems.

For too many years have I watched draft after draft only to wonder why so many top candidates fell to the Bears only to be passed up by too many GM’s. This draft has an eerily similar feel to past drafts I have watched, though I am reminded by my inner-self that it is way too early to do anything but offer critiques, grades and hollow judgements. Kyle Long, Jon Bostic, Khaseem Greene, Jordan Mills, Cornelius Washington, and Marquess Wilson are now Chicago Bears and their legacy will be defined by their actions, not by the written words of sports writers.

This is Phil Emery’s second draft. And for the second time, I believe he drafted a player in the first round that could have been had in the second. For the second year, his #2 pick seems to be a better pick than his first round. Certainly last year’s pick, Shea McClellin played well…about what I would expect a second round pick to play like while the second round pick, Alshon Jeffery had moments that I would say were more impactful in a good way for the Bears.

The Chicago Bears wrapped up Day 3 up adding a defensive end and wide receiver in Rounds 6 and 7 on the 2013 NFL Draft by selecting Georgia Defensive End Cornelius Washington and troubled wide receiver Marquess Wilson out of Washington State in Round 7. Both players could be considered value picks with high ceilings at low-risk spots in the draft. Like most Phil Emery picks, they are big on measurables and talent, but have some risks associated with them. Let’s take a closer look at each selection.

Cornelius Washington

The 6’4″ 265 lb Georgia defensive end could be a little bit of a tweener, with some scouts projecting him as more of a 3-4 outside linebacker. Hmm, where have I heard that before about a Phil Emery draft pick? Washington is no doubt an athletic freak, tearing up the Combine with monster numbers in most of the drills. He was second among linebackers in the 40-yard dash with a 4.55, and was top performer in the broad jump and vertical jump. Not bad for a man who also benched 225 lbs 36 times. That’s a ridiculous size/speed/strength ratio. The reason he was around until the 6th round was that the production on the field didn’t match the ability.

Here’s NFL.com’s bottom line on Washington:

A tall, long defensive end/rush linebacker who hasn’t been able to break through quite yet, but flashes the strength and quickness (10 career sacks) to be a factor. The production has never been there, but Washington’s flashes and potential will likely result in a team selecting him to contribute down the line.

I can’t help but wonder if Phil Emery is loading up on players to re-build his defense into a 3-4 with some of his recent selections.

Let’s face it. Peanut Tillman isn’t getting any younger. Tim Jennings shined this year alongside Tillman, but it’s time the Chicago Beras started stacking the defensive backfield. The Bears haven’t struck gold yet with Chris Conte, Greg McCoy, or Brandon Hardin. Time to find a defensive back that will actually make a difference.

So how about B.W. Webb? He’s not a top five cornerback, but we don’t need to use our first two picks on a guy like Webb. But, the fourth round pick is promising for this guy. Here’s some of his stats from NFL.com and TribeAthletics.com:

Height: 5’10″

Weight: 184 lbs.

Position Rank: 11/12

Arm Length: 30 1/4″

Hands: 9 3/8″

40-yard dash: 4.51

Vertical Jump: *40.5 inches*

Broad Jump: *132 inches*

Stats at William & Mary:

2012: Started 11 games, 46 tackles, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble, one touchdown off a punt return

  2011: 11 games, 40 tackles, two interceptions

2010: 12 games, 42 tackles, one interception, one touchdown off a punt return

2009: 14 games, 23 tackles, 8 interceptions (two of which were touchdowns)

B.W. Webb played four years at The College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Viriginia. And yes, I had to look that one up. I’d never heard of William & Mary until today. In his redshirt freshman year, Webb recorded eight interceptions then was named Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Freshman of the Year. Even though William & Mary finished 2-9 overall in 2012, that shouldn’t turn you off of B.W. Webb.

When watching his tapes, the first thing that popped in my mind is that he has the mentality of the Chicago Bears defense. Take aways, interceptions, etc. Some of his strong abilities is tracking the ball down the field, and competition in the air. He has extraordinary leaping abilities to get the tip, and is active with his hands (but not too active). Another very strong characteristic he has is his speed. Playing at William & Mary, his on-field speed was astounding and he smoked everyone on the field. But I can’t help but wonder how much of that speed will transfer to the NFL.

Another reason why I think he’s a great fit for the Bears is his ability to wrap up opponents to make the tackle. Such a fundamental that many Bears players in the backfield simply can’t grasp. He may not have the power to push players back with his tackles, but he gets the job done. He also a good sense of patience as a tackler that most college players do not have coming into the pros.

His biggest weakness from the things I’ve heard and read is his abilities in man coverage. In college, Webb played in a zone coverage a lot. Some say that he lacks the backpedalling abilities because of his lack of man coverage. Webb’s primary focus should be man coverage, and learning from whichever veteran on his team about it.

All in all, I’m a big fan of B.W. Webb. He hasn’t recorded any on or off the field problems. From the things I’ve read, seems like a very determined, driven player with a great competitive attitude. His tape reminds of Tim Jennings, which is a good thing. Man coverage can be taught, but how quick will he learn? Having Lance Briggs as a teacher is probably the best he can get. His intangibles are astounding, and the Bears should start adding to their shutdown backfield before they’re all too old to move. Oh, did I mention he can play on special teams too?

Bears fans, what do you think? Is B.W. Webb the next Peanut Tillman or Tim Jennings? Is there another guy that the Bears could take late that might be better than Webb? Make sure to comment!

For the next week and a half, the million dollar question for Chicago Bears fans will be, “Who will be the Bears first round pick?” With the Bears defensive leader, Brian Urlacher, out it leaves room for a new sheriff in the Windy City. If Georgia linebacker Alec Ogletree is taken by the Chicago Bears first pick, Kansas State linebacker Arthur Brown might just be the next best new face for the Bears defense.

Stats of Kansas State linebacker Arthur Brown from NFLDraftScout.com and Sports-Reference.com:

Height: 6-1

Weight: 241 lbs.

40-yard dash: 4.67

Bench Reps (225 lbs): 21

20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.31

Stats from KSU:

2011: 57 solo tackles 44 assisted tackles 101 total tackles 2.0 sacks 1 interception

2012: 65 solo tackles 35 assisted tackles 100 total tackles 1.o sack 2 interceptions 1 touchdown

Outsides of his stats, Arthur Brown first committed and attended Miami (FL) before arriving at Kansas State. Brown struggled his first two years at Miami recording only 17 tackles before transferring closer to home to KSU. Brown sat out for the 2010 season due to transfer rules, then flourished at Kansas State. Also key to note is his height, 6’1″, which seems to be holding him back from being part of the top tier prospects club. Good news for him, he sure doesn’t play like he’s just over 6-feet.

There’s no doubt that the Chicago Bears are interested in Brown, seeing as Brown did have a private workout with the Bears already. He played in a 4-3 traditional defense with superior run, chase, and coverage skills. What’s most impressive is his sideline-to-sideline range, which is outstanding. For an aging Bears defense, Brown would be an amazing fit at linebacker, where Lance Briggs is probably getting old of being the guy chasing down men from across the field.

Out of all the linebackers to choose in the 2013 NFL Draft, Brown might be the most instinctive. Something that the Bears will prize, and hopefully it will mean that he can make an impact during his rookie year. His speediness combined with his ability to read the play make him quite an intriguing first round pick and an explosive linebacker. Scouts have him posted at an outside linebacker, but played two years at middle linebacker and seemed to be able to hold up the job.

After losing the face of the franchise, the Chicago Bears are looking for a face to replace Urlacher with. A young, level-headed guy that has the durability to last just like Urlacher. With Ogletree having some off-the-field issues, Marc Trestman should be vouching for Brown as their first round pick. With a new collection of talent at the linebacker position this year in the Windy City, it could be a time for Brown to establish his position among the many one-year signees this year. With the Bears offense constantly on a roller coaster, we pride ourselves in the defensive game. Brown might just be able to give the Bears a fresh start, in conjunction with Trestman, to a new era of the Chicago Bears.

Chicago Bears fan, what do you think? Do you think Arthur Brown will be THAT guy for the Bears? Make sure to comment!

Fluker

In free agency, the Chicago Bears made who marque moves offensively…to sign TE Martellus Bennett and LT Jermon Bushrod. It’s without question the the Bears offensive line needs an upgrade. But Bushrod is only part of the equation. The Bears needs to take advantage of the amount of quality offensive lineman in the 2013 NFL Draft starting with Alabama’s offensive lineman D.J. Fluker. Now they can’t take someone like Georgia linebacker Alec Ogletree AND Fluker…it’s an either/or sort of deal because Fluker would need to be their first round selection.

D.J. Fluker may not be the top 2 offensive tackles in this year’s draft, but you could put him around the 4th best in the 2013 draft. Still a good bargain. Take a look at some of his measurements and combine stats from NFLMocks and NFLCombineResults.com:

Height: 6’5″

Weight: 339 pounds

Position Rank: 4

40-yard dash: 5.31 seconds

Bench Press: 21 reps

Here’s some highlights of Fluker at Right Tackle with the Crimson Tide:

Is it a mistake to not take a linebacker in the first round? Absolutely not. Bushrod alone is not enough. The offensive lineman the Bears have already is not enough. I believe that Fluker is the missing piece, and the guy that will help Bushrod, Cutler, and Forte earn their money.

Fluker’s experience is a plus. I would rather the Bears take a guy like Fluker with BCS title game experience OVER a guy like Kyle Long who does not have exactly that sort of experience. Fluker has huge hands with good length for a lineman. For a right tackle, Fluker has respectable speed with solid footwork, sometimes beating defensive ends in college. He will make his money with the run game with his ability to latch onto pass rushers. Coming off a year that Forte didn’t shine, it’s a great addition to get him back on top. Even if Bears fans will see the “option” with Cutler, he’s a great addition that might even give Cutler that extra second or two.

Forget Gabe Carimi. Become a D.J. Fluker fan. He’s not a guy that will demand attention, but will get the job done. He’s young and will be around for awhile. And these days, a worthy offensive lineman is, well, worth millions of dollars.

Bears fans, what do you think? Should the Bears use their first round pick on an offensive lineman?
