It wouldn’t be an offseason in the NFC North without trying to figure out what Brett Farve will do in the upcoming season. Favre-watch took an interesting turn today when #4 in Purple exchanged e-mails with ESPN’s Ed Werder, where he shared that he would need surgery in order to continue his career:

“We have spoken,” Favre said in an e-mail. “To play again, I would need the surgery, as I suspected. This decision would be easy if not for my teammates and the fans and the entire Vikings staff. One year truly felt like 10 — much like Green Bay for many years. That’s what I was missing in my heart I suppose, a sense of belonging.”

Favre dropped during the Bears 36-30 OT win in Soldier Field (Photo: Getty Images)

Awww, isn’t that sweet? He felt like he belonged in Minnesota. It’s my hope that Julius Peppers makes Favre feel like he belongs on the turf!

Favre spent years holding the Packers and their offseason plans hostage while deciding whether or not to come back. Now he’s got this decision to mull over as Viking fans hold their collective breath. They probably missed out on getting Donovan McNabb from the Eagles and passed on drafting a QB in anticipation that Favre would return.

He’s retired, un-retired, re-retired and un-retired again. Even if he announced today that he wasn’t going to have the surgery, could we really take him seriously? Would we really believe that he wasn’t coming back?

If he really does decide to retire, move the Bears up a peg in the NFC North pecking order. Purple Jesus is great, but until he learns how to hang on to the ball, he won’t carry the Vikings anywhere by himself.

At the end of the day, Favre is just an attention whore and can’t let too much of the offseason pass without the spotlight shining on him.
