Kidding aside, if you’re like me, the Bears are a point for bonding with my dad, so call up the old man and bond with him over the exciting season that is upon us.

NFL Network has just reported that the Minnesota Vikings have waived WR Randy Moss. This is following a lackluster performance on Sunday against the New England Patriots where he only had 1 catch for 8 yards. He has been vocal about missing his former team since the trade. However, his effort could have been in response to being fined $25,000 last week for not cooperating with the media. It was obvious he wasn’t happy about the fine when, after the game this Sunday, he told the media that “I’ll ask my own questions.” Whatever that means.

Shipwrecked

A Bears fan, a Packers fan, and a Vikings fan get shipwrecked on an island and some natives take them to their king. At first, the king plans to execute them, then, he decides to grant them one wish, twenty lashes on the back, and let them go.
The Vikings fan wishes for a pillow strapped to his back. It doesn’t hold well during the whipping and broke after 5 whips, leaving 15 painful marks on his back. The Packers fan wishes for 2 pillows. It lasts for ten whips and he ended up screaming in pain. When it was the Bears fan’s turn though, a smile came across his face. (more…)

For those of you who have been with BGO for a while, you know that I am a fantasy football junkie and I provide my insights for you each and every week during the football season. Before I get to a league-wide post, I thought I would write a short piece about some of our very own Chicago Bears who you may be able to “buy low” on for your upcoming fantasy football draft. Let’s face it, injuries aside, fantasy football leagues are won in the rounds 4 and on and you have to take some gambles that other teams aren’t willing to take. For those of you who play in leagues that don’t have a majority of Bears fans in them, you may be able to get a real leg up with some of these players who likely will be overlooked in the early rounds.

If Jay Cutler can cut down on his INT's, he'll be a factor in fantasy leagues.

Jay Cutler – Let’s start at the top, because the fortunes of the Beloved are firmly tied to the right arm of our QB. JC will likely go overlooked in many fantasy drafts primarily due to his proclivity to throw the ball to the wrong team and because he is learning the ultracomplicated Martzian offense behind an offensive line that had a lot of problems keeping him upright last season. Personally, I have high hopes for JC and I think he will end up somewhere in the 30-35 TD pass range and have a chance at 4,000 yds passing. Stats like these would merit a 3rd or 4th round selection in most PPR leagues and maybe even higher, but we know JC will not be considered that high in most leagues, so you have a chance to wait on him if you think I am right. I will not comment on INTs, because frankly if you lose a point or 2 for INTs, that won’t kill you on a week to week basis, provided JC can avoid the 3+ INT games, which is where the risk comes in. I think it is a risk worth taking.

Matt Forte – Following an outstanding rookie campaign, Forte broke many owners’ hearts last season, including mine, with a subpar (I am being nice) sophomore season. Forte’s play last year probably wouldn’t warrant consideration until the 3rd or 4th round, but I believe he will bounce back and give you solid 2nd round production. I think Forte is good for 1,000+ yds rushing and 8-10 TDs. The wildcard with Forte is how he will be utilized in the passing game, which could greatly increase his value.

More after the jump…

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before…for the third time in his career, Brett Favre has retired or shall I say, allegedly retired. Favre, from here on referred to as Gramps has decided to hang up his cleats again as the vicious beating he took in last year’s NFC Championship game proved to be too much for him to return. Click here for two of my favorite pictures of Gramps.

As a God-fearing Bears fan, I can honestly say I HATE Gramps…always have and always will. As a football fan, I think you’d be hard pressed to find a tougher S.O.B. To start 285 consecutive games is a record I don’t think will ever be broken. That said, I think this roller coaster ride he took the Viqueens on, while amusing (and equally annoying) to me, was a complete screw job. The Viqueens could have gone in many different directions at QB, but he kept their collective nuts in a vice, because he is also one of the most selfish S.O.B.’s to ever play this great game and I don’t think his ability is worth it at his advanced age. Sure, he had a great season last year, but when you get behind the wheel of a brand new Cadillac, you’d expect it to drive right, which is similar to the situation Gramps fell into with the Viqueens last year. Don’t get me wrong, I think the Viqueens with Tavaris Jackson are not nearly as formidable as a Viqueens team with Gramps, so as a Bears fan, this is a GREAT DAY!!! However, this is the third time Gramps has retired, so I guess we will have to wait and see. Hopefully, the third time is the charm!!!

Week 3 takes the Beloved to Seattle and also marks the site of the annual pilgrimage of my Brothers (aka very long-time friends) to see the Bears play on the road. Watch out SeaChicken fans, The Brotherhood is coming and Qwest Field may never be the same again. Wish us luck and forgiving law enforcement. Now, I ascend my pulpit to do some preaching for Week 3. This week is slightly truncated since I just became a father for the 3rd time on Saturday and because I still need to pack for my trip to Seattle. (more…)

The Chicago Bears may not have to worry about playing football in January, but a couple players will get the opportunity to play in February.

Devin Hester destroyed the competition for a spot on the roster in deserving fashion with another dominant year on special teams. Few players demand so much attention on the field to a degree that teams would rather give the Bears the ball at the 40 yard line rather than kick to him. Now if only the Bears offense could make teams hurt for giving them field position. Imagine a Bears offense that could put up points and force teams to kick to Hester, now that would be something.

Lance Briggs gets another ticket to Hawaii with a solid year at linebacker and reminding everyone why he deserves a big contract. He may not get many interceptions or sacks but he is always in the right spot to make a tackle and prevent a big play. His solid tackling skills make him a huge asset on the field for a defense that has shown they have made an art to the diving, arm tackle.

Tommie Harris was selected to his third straight Pro Bowl, although he won’t be making the trip to Honolulu. His bad knee has been limiting him all season, all the more amazing when you consider he has still made contributions to the defense on game day. When he comes back healthy next season he will be a force that opposing offensive lines will have to plan on containing.

Brendon Ayanbadejo earned his trip for special teams player with his 24 special teams tackles. He is also quickly becoming a fan favorite along the same lines as Adrian Peterson with his selfless play. Guys like him are what elevate a team to a higher level of play.

Almost as notable as the 4 players named to the Pro Bowl where a couple key names that didn’t appear on the list. Olin Kreutz had established himself as a sure thing for the starting center spot in Hawaii each year with his tough play, but he will miss out on the trip for the first time in 6 years. I hate to say it but I think his ommission was appropriate the way the Bears offensive line has performed. Kreutz is one of my favorite players on the team, but he didn’t play with the same fire this season.

The constant discussion of Brian Urlacher’s back may have undone his ticket to paradise, even though his numbers don’t reflect much of a slump. With 2 games to go he has 107 tackles, 5 sacks, and 3 interceptions, which makes him 1st in tackles, 3rd in sacks, and 1st in interceptions for the team. Not too shabby for a guy with a bad back.

The 4 selections for the Bears is a good reflection of this season, with only 2 representatives on the defense and none for the offense. Most of the troubles on defense will be fixed with a little time and healing, but the offense needs to find a way to produce Pro Bowl caliber players. You know what, scratch that, how about they just work on finding a way on putting up points when they start every possession from their own 40 yard line and force teams to kick to Hester. That would be a good start.
