Chicago Bears Hall of Famer and ProFootballWeekly analyst Dan Hampton issued an apology following his Hurricane Katrina comment in advance of Thursday night’s NFC Championship game rematch between the Minnesota Vikings and the New Orleans Saints.

I would like to offer my most sincere apologies to everyone who was offended in any way by my reference to Hurricane Katrina in our most recent “Pro Football Weekly” TV show.

It was a spur-of-the-moment comment intended strictly as a metaphor for the storm-like intensity I believe the Vikings will bring to their rematch with the Saints, and it simply never occurred to me that anyone could read anything more than that into it.

I have nothing but the deepest respect and greatest admiration for the people of the Gulf Coast, and I am horrified that even one of you would think I would make light of the terror Katrina wrought, and that I have clearly offended so many of you.

I realize now it was a terrible choice of words, and I offer absolutely no excuses. I screwed up, about as badly as I could, and I am deeply and profoundly sorry.

— Dan Hampton

Former Chicago Bear and Hall of Famer Dan Hampton is now an analyst for Pro Football Weekly’s TV show where they break down the NFL action each week. Here is Danimal previewing Thursday night’s NFL Kickoff game, the Minnesota Vikings visiting the Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints:

That’s brutal. What’s worse than the comment itself (if it’s possible) is how the show’s producers didn’t go back and edit that segment. How does that clip not get to the cutting room floor? The show is pre-recorded, so they had plenty of opportunity to re-record his comment or edit it out altogether.

Hampton earned his Hall of Fame status for his relentlessness on the field but it’s clear that he’s not a HOF caliber analyst. Hampton is noted for having had a ton of surgeries over his career and I guess it’s time for another one: removing his foot from his mouth.

Trying to catch up on some loose ends for the week that was:

He’s not, for now…

Brett Favre allegedly, supposedly seemingly will not come out of retirement to join the Vikings. Can we call off the Favre-watch stakeout of Kiln, Mississippi? Can ESPN talk about something else? Stay tuned.

It’s unfortunate that he won’t join the Vikes, but maybe the sideshow can drag out into training camp and provide enough of a distraction to keep the defending NFC North champs off their game? Any time Sage Rosenfels or Tarvaris Jackson throws an interception, will they be looking over their shoulder?

In case you were wondering what Jay Cutler thinks about the possibility, don’t worry, Larry Mayer’s got ya covered from his chalk talk: (more…)

Super Bowl XX MVP Richard Dent was denied in his fifth bid for enshrinement into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Dent, of course, was an integral cog of the ferocious Bears defense of the 80′s. All-time sacks leader Bruce Smith was selected in his first year of eligibility along with Wide receiver Bob Hayes, guard Randall McDaniel, linebacker Derrick Thomas, owner Ralph Wilson, and defensive back Rod Woodson to make up the Class of 2009 Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinees.

Dent’s time is definitely coming and I have no doubt that he will take his rightful place alongside teammates Mike Singletary and Dan Hampton from the vaunted ’85 Bears defense. The Colonel was a 4-time Pro Bowler and 1 time All Pro. At the time of his retirement, he was third all time with 137.5 sacks, behind Hall of Famers Reggie White and Bruce Smith.
