The offseason picture is coming into focus for the Chicago Bears as the draft approaches. A couple of weeks ago, we projected the offensive starters. While Phil Emery went shopping for some big ticket items for the offense, the defense appears to be getting the leftovers.

Now, let’s look at how Phil Emery has set the Mel Tucker’s defensive unit, which keeps a lot of key holdovers from the old era, but definitely takes on new look. (more…)

In a season of anomalies and happenstance, it’s hard to believe in trends, but the Chicago Bears defense is starting to be a concern. While, we all know that they can change games with turnovers and big plays, those have been few and far between recently. Take away the five turnovers they had against the Minnesota Vikings two weeks ago, and they only have four turnovers since Week 12. They are also giving up 23.2 points, 368.2 yards and 21.4 first downs per game to opposing offenses. This is not the Bears defense that we are used to.

According to ESPN‘s Eric Karabell, the Bears Defense is the most overrated in Fantasy Football. Let’s see what he has to say in his Fantasy Defense Preview…

Really? I’ve been critical of the Bears defense, but struggle to put them in the top half? That might be going a little bit far. While the D hasn’t been at their 2006 Super Bowl level the past couple of seasons, they’re still an opportunistic group creates turnovers and has a great special teams group that should bolster your fantasy stats.

Mondays are always tough. Worse yet when the Bears lose. Truly painful when it is to a division opponent they paddled last year. Gut wrenching when the loss is a result of allowing 5, count ‘em 5 touchdowns in the 4th quarter. Was this the coronation for the terrible, horrible, no-good, very-bad season? It remains to be seen.

The Chicago Bears had a new look at the quarterback position with Brian Griese replacing Rex Grossman. However, the more things change, the more things stay the same. Hobbled by a number of significant injuries, the Bears were banged up on both offense and defense. The end result was a heart breaking loss that, while ugly, was a game which the Bears had very much in control until the 4th quarter.

This was a game that very easily could have gone a different way. One needs only to look back to the ridiculous number of ball charity (5 fumbles, three interceptions) to see much of the problem. And it wasn’t even the interception returned for a touchdown that hurt the most. (Go back and check that play out. Fantastic coverage played by the Detroit Lions, lining up in man coverage and sliding into a weak zone. That sort of drop will make an offensive coordinator loose his lunch) What hurt the Bears’ offense most was the missed opportunities. Throwing two interceptions inside the 10 yard line? That’s a ballgame. (more…)
