In a stunning turn of events, the Bears placed supplemental draft pick, running back Harvey Unga on Injured Reserve, ending his season before it ever started. Who would have ever thought that he would end up on injured reserve? Me, that’s who!

Drafting Unga puts Garret Wolfe of really shaky ground with the Bears and pretty much spells the end of the Kahlil Bell era unless Unga comes up with a mysterious injury late in camp and was to go on IR. Not that I would possibly suggest that the Bears would do that sort of thing. NAH! Never!

That, kids, is why I get paid the big blogger bucks. Pay attention, you just might learn something.

Is it just me or is this a common occurrence with the Bears, maybe even more than usual? I know for sure that Henry Melton came down with an injury that kept him out for the season and a few years ago Dusty Dvoracek sat out the season.

The move might give Garrett Wolfe a stay of execution, but he’s still got some stiff competition with Kahlil Bell for the third running back spot. There’s something to watch in the second half on Saturday night, as the Bears open their preseason schedule against the Chargers in San Diego.

You knew a couple of pre-Bourbonais moves were forthcoming for the Bears when they selected RB Harvey Unga in the supplemental draft last week and picked up free agent QB Mike Teel yesterday. In order to complete those transactions, the Bears had to create two roster spots. The two longshots who save themselves a trip to Olivet Nazarene are wide receiver Vic Hall and defensive tackle Jimmy Saddler-McQueen.

The Bears inked Unga to a 4-year deal and paid out a whopping $60,250. That’s what Julius Peppers drops on champagne on a bad night. Come on Bears – this is the Cougars’ all-time leading rusher. Hook him up!

Despite missing the opportunity to trade away draft picks in last April’s draft, the Chicago Bears still managed to trade away one of next season’s draft picks; forfeiting their 2011 7th round pick for the right to select BYU running back Harvey Unga.

This shouldn’t come as a total surprise; there were rumblings about the Bears’ interest going back a few days now. The bigger question should be why the heck the Bears are taking another running back. The backfield would seem to have been crowded enough especially for an offense that an offense that doesn’t really use a fullback, a position that the 6-1, 244 lbs Unga would seem well-suited to play.

More after the jump
