One of my biggest concerns heading into training camp has been the secondary. The questions surrounding their depth at cornerback are compounded by the cast of characters at the safety position. Things seemed like they might settle down a little bit when the Bears traded to bring back Chris Harris and invested their top draft pick in Major Wright. In the early going, it looks like the Bears have to investigate Plans B and C with Chris Harris and Major Wright going down with injuries.

The good news is that neither injury appears to be too serious, but they only go to strengthen my point about concerns at the position. Company man Larry Mayer will put a silver lining on the dark cloud by telling everyone how the down time for potential starters Harris and Wright mean added snaps for guys like Steltz, Bullocks and Afalava, but with such a desperate need for solidifying the position, the Bears can ill-afford starters missing valuable reps.

After all of the hoopla surrounding Jay Cutler‘s return to Denver, let’s not forget there’s actually a football game to be played. Even though it’s just the preseason, the third game is always the one to focus on the most. The teams game plan. The starters play into the third quarter. This is a close to the regular season as it gets.

Here’s what the guru’s over at ESPN think:

Trent Dilfer brings analysis like he used to bring passes back when he was with Bucs- weak and off the mark. An opportunity for Kyle Orton? Gimme a break!

Here are the things I’ll be watching for after the Cutler drama dies down a bit: (more…)

Jerry Angelo awoke from his hibernation and made a couple of moves yesterday. First, the Bears released Terrence Metcalf because there were too many linemen on the roster. That bold move cleared the way to sign former Saints safety Josh Bullocks. I pulled this video from Steve Rosenbloom’s Rosenblog.

I don’t get it. How could this guy be a better choice at safety than Mike Brown? I know Brownie has a medical file the approximate size of Alaska, but wouldn’t it be worth the risk compared to what’s out there?

In case the Bears were short on a cornerback to blow a lead in the final seconds (you’re welcome Atlanta), they signed Marcus Hamilton to a 1-year deal.

Finally, John Tait was moved from the active roster to the reserve/retired list today. While it’s no surprise, I was still holding out hope that maybe the Bears could convince him to play one more year before retirement.

Must be nice to be 34 and retired. I’m getting flashes of Kramer at the Seinfeld’s retirement community at Del Boca Vista, Phase II. Like I said, hilarity ensues. Now back to your nap Jerry. Angelo, that is. Seinfeld not so much.
