Nevermore!

For all you Bears fans out there who thought that Marc Bulger would be the ideal veteran backup to Jay Cutler, you’d better start working on Plan B. Or C. Marc Bulger has agreed to terms with the Baltimore Ravens on a 1-year deal that will reportedly pay $3.8 million.

Bulger will be the insurance policy in case Joe Flacco can’t build on a successful 2009 campaign. He’ll be competing with Troy Smith and John Beck to be Joe’s backup.

Why couldn’t Mike Martz deliver his former quarterback to the Bears? If it seems like he’s resigned himself to be a backup, why isn’t he a Bear? I’ve got 3.8 million reasons for you.

The Bears wrapped up Rookie Minicamp and the biggest news that came out of it was offensive coordinator Mike Martz and his frank comments. Among them was that the Bears need to get a veteran QB to back up Jay Cutler:

“It would always help, that’s for sure,” Martz said when asked if he would prefer a quarterback he has worked with before. “It doesn’t have to be. A good player is a good player. It’s just harder for them to learn, basically. A veteran has been through several systems, usually, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. Jon Kitna had been through a bunch of systems. It would give him a leg up and make it easier, especially if he joins us late, but a good player is a good player and we’ll make it work.”

Many have speculated that Marc Bulger might be a good fit, but I think he’s got his sights set on trying to compete for a starting job. Meanwhile, Josh McCown, another former Mike Martz pupil, is letting it known that he is ready to come in and accept a backup roll with the Bears. This from ESPN Chicago’s Bears Blog:

With as many hits as Jay Cutler took last season, it was a miracle that he finished the season in one piece and we never saw Caleb Hanie take any meaningful snaps. Now that the Rams have released longtime quarterback Marc Bulger, it would make all of the sense in the world to bring him in to be Cutler’s backup.

Bulger spent time with Mike Martz and knows his system cold, making him a valuable asset for the Bears as they adopt Mad Mike’s voluminous playbook. (Yes, voluminous is a word. Look it up!)

One thing I haven’t heard much about is the other side of the coin. To us, it makes perfect sense, but what about Bulger? What makes sense for him? Maybe wearing a baseball cap and holding a clipboard until the unthinkable happens to Jay Cutler is not how he plans to spend the “golden years” of his NFL career.
