The New Orleans Saints are up next in our Reader’s Mock draft. We’re almost halfway through the first round and there haven’t been any major upsets unless you count my screwup in allowing Lane Johnson to be in the voting after he was already selected. Other than that, things are sailing along.

The Saints have the Bounty scandal behind them and are ready to make a run at the NFC South title. With Sean Peyton in the penalty box, the Saints started poorly and never recovered. They finished a respectable 7-9 to get them right into the middle of the pack. Offense hasn’t really been the problem for the Saints; it’s their defense that needs a major upgrade. They were awful in every sense of the word, finishing ranked 32nd in yards per game at over 440 yards allowed every game. To put that in perspective, the 31st ranked Giants gave up about 383 yards per game. That’s a huge margin that Sean Payton needs to solve for next season, which might explain why they brought in the controversial Rob Ryan to take over the defense.

For the 2nd time in a month Aaron Berry was arrested in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Berry was arrested on three counts of assault by the Harrisburg Police Department Saturday morning. The only thing released about the arrest was that a handgun was involved. Berry was also arrested in June for a DUI charge. The Detroit Lions do not lack for publicity this off season.

Here’s a recap of the Lions off season rap sheets

1. Mikel Leshoure- Marijuana

2. Nick Fairley- DUI

3. Mikel Leshoure-Marijuana

4.Johnny Culbreath-Marijuana

5. Nick Fairley-Marijuana

6. Aaron Berry- DUI

7. Aaron Berry- Assault

(Bonus 2011) 8. Corey Williams- DWI

It almost feels like the Lions have slipped back into pre-Roger Goodell mode when there were not any repercussions for getting arrested! Granted Goodell isn’t going to bring down the hammer like he did to the New Orleans Saints for Bounty-Gate to the Lions, but his justice will be felt by the Detroit organization. He must be getting very agitated with each passing day and arrest.

The Lions training camp starts on July 26th which has to be a huge relief to the Lions organization and Coach Schwartz. This off season will finally come to an end, but is it too late to gain any type of control of this organization? Granted nobody will remember this off season of turmoil if the Lions make a deep run in the playoffs, but if they fall flat on their collective faces one would think heads will roll for this never ending trip to jail.

It’s been mentioned ALOT! entirely too much, but they are our rivals!

DA BEARS!!

As Confucius said, a journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step. That first step toward Dallas and Super Bowl XLV took place on Saturday. While the Bears were cozied up at home, Wild Card Saturday got the 2011 playoffs underway with a bang. The worst-ever-in-the-playoff 7-9 Seattle Seahawks pulled a major upset, knocking off the defending world champion New Orleans Saints 41-36 to punch their ticket to the Divisional Round of the playoffs. Check out the highlights here.

Earlier in the week, I took a stab at what I thought was the ideal path for the Bears to get to Dallas. Step 1 has been completed with the Seahawks’ upset win. Now the hard part. I mean the really, really hard part for Bears fans. We should be rooting for the Packers to beat the Eagles on Sunday.

Those may have been the hardest words I’ve ever had to type, but it could all be worth it. If the Packers can pull off the win in Philly, the Seahawks come to Soldier Field. Even though the Bears lost to Seattle earlier this year, they scare me a hell of a lot less than the Eagles.

For one thing, he Seahawks don’t get to bring their 12th man on the road and they’re not the same away from Qwest. Second, I like the Bears in a revenge game. Lovie will have the troops revved up to avenge a tough early-season loss. Third, the Wild Card win at home was the Seahawks’ Super Bowl. They proved their point, overcoming a double digit point spread and the jeers of the football world as the “worst playoff team ever” to pull the upset.

Enjoy the matchup on Sunday.

Go Pack but most importantly…

The Minnesota Vikings are looking up at the Bears, Packers and even the lowly Lions after their season opening 14-9 loss to the world champion New Orleans Saints. Check out the NFL.com highlights here. Thanks to Drew Brees and company for the solid. A couple of quick observations about the Bears’ division rivals:

Grandpa Favre’s training camp abstinence program may have finally caught up with him and cost his team. Last year they got to warm up against the Browns, but not this year.

The old man had a brief flash of his old self at the end of the fist half, but looked lost in the second half, completing only 4 passes.

The injury to Sidney Rice will loom large. The Vikings’ leading receiver was tight end Visanthe Shiancoe with 4 catches for 76 yards and a TD.

You can run on these Vikings. The Saints, not exactly known as a running team, averaged about 4 yards per carry. They didn’t get 100 yards rushing, but I think they could have. Could the Williams Wall be crumbling?

It’s too bad the Bears don’t get to face the Vikings while Grandpa is still settling in. Football is back. All is right with the world.

Former Chicago Bear and Hall of Famer Dan Hampton is now an analyst for Pro Football Weekly’s TV show where they break down the NFL action each week. Here is Danimal previewing Thursday night’s NFL Kickoff game, the Minnesota Vikings visiting the Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints:

That’s brutal. What’s worse than the comment itself (if it’s possible) is how the show’s producers didn’t go back and edit that segment. How does that clip not get to the cutting room floor? The show is pre-recorded, so they had plenty of opportunity to re-record his comment or edit it out altogether.

Hampton earned his Hall of Fame status for his relentlessness on the field but it’s clear that he’s not a HOF caliber analyst. Hampton is noted for having had a ton of surgeries over his career and I guess it’s time for another one: removing his foot from his mouth.

For any fans who thought the Bears might totally re-shape their defensive backfield by bringing in free safety Darren Sharper, you can forget it. Sharper just re-signed with the New Orleans Saints. Here’s what Saints GM Mickey Loomis had to say:

“We have said since the end of the season that we would love to have Darren back in a Saints uniform for 2010 and I’m glad we’ve been able to make that happen,” G.M. Mickey Loomis said. “Darren was an integral part of our Super Bowl-winning team and we look forward to having him back.”

When the Bears drafted Major Wright to play free safety, the thought of getting a veteran safety diminished greatly. With Sharper off the market, there really aren’t any safety prospects available unless the Rams and OJ Atogwe can’t comes to terms in the next month.
