As Confucius said, a journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step. That first step toward Dallas and Super Bowl XLV took place on Saturday. While the Bears were cozied up at home, Wild Card Saturday got the 2011 playoffs underway with a bang. The worst-ever-in-the-playoff 7-9 Seattle Seahawks pulled a major upset, knocking off the defending world champion New Orleans Saints 41-36 to punch their ticket to the Divisional Round of the playoffs. Check out the highlights here.

Earlier in the week, I took a stab at what I thought was the ideal path for the Bears to get to Dallas. Step 1 has been completed with the Seahawks’ upset win. Now the hard part. I mean the really, really hard part for Bears fans. We should be rooting for the Packers to beat the Eagles on Sunday.

Those may have been the hardest words I’ve ever had to type, but it could all be worth it. If the Packers can pull off the win in Philly, the Seahawks come to Soldier Field. Even though the Bears lost to Seattle earlier this year, they scare me a hell of a lot less than the Eagles.

For one thing, he Seahawks don’t get to bring their 12th man on the road and they’re not the same away from Qwest. Second, I like the Bears in a revenge game. Lovie will have the troops revved up to avenge a tough early-season loss. Third, the Wild Card win at home was the Seahawks’ Super Bowl. They proved their point, overcoming a double digit point spread and the jeers of the football world as the “worst playoff team ever” to pull the upset.

Enjoy the matchup on Sunday.

Go Pack but most importantly…

It moves! It half-lumbers, half-shuffles off the table. After all of this careful work, after intensely measuring such fragile ingredients, after successfully balancing nerve-wracking nurturing with flat-out guesswork, what is going through the mind of our triumphant Mad Scientist? Is he dancing a jig, giggling like a crazed hermit? Is he slumped in exhaustion, his head buried in his sweaty labcoat? Are his arms raised in tearful elation or folded in self-congratulatory satisfaction?

I believe that our Mad Martz is a perfectionist. I believe that the elation of watching his offense score 21 points in one half, of managing a single series that lasted over TEN minutes, of seeing his once inanimate quarterback throw FOUR touchdowns without an interception… I believe the satisfaction, joy, pride and sense of accomplishment that he felt at the end of that game lasted… only until he saw the game film.

There were some GREAT things in this game. But, there were some horrible ones too. I’m personally puzzled at how we could be so GOOD and so BAD, yet be so dominant. (more…)

A Reading from the First Letter of Ditka to the Eagles

Da Coach addressed da crybaby Eagles, who complained about da field conditions at Soldier Field after their 31-26 loss to the Beloved Bears.

“We heard about the bad field and all this, stop it,” Ditka said Monday on “Mike & Mike” on ESPN 1000. “Everybody plays on the same field. You’re a hockey team, you play on the same ice. This is a joke. If you don’t understand it, get longer cleats. Just play football. If you don’t know how to run, if you don’t know how to plant, then you’ll have a problem. But the field is the field. What are you going to do, change the field? That’s all they’ve got in Chicago.”

As I took a look back at the 2010 Chicago Bears season to date, I found myself wondering, how did this rag tag group of players win seven games? Then, as I read about the Eagles CB Ellis Hobbs being out for the season and CB Asante Samuel possibly out this week, it hit me. The Bears have been unbelievably healthy all season and the familiarity they have had with each other has bred success. That worries me the most.

The only significant injuries that the Bears have sustained were LB Hunter Hillenmeyer’s concussion, which landed him on the IR during the preseason, and a finger injury to untested, but talented rookie S Major Wright, who has missed five games. Other than that, a guy or two have missed a game here or there, every once in awhile. To put it simply, the football gods have been nice to the Bears this year. To me, it just sounds a little too good to be true, don’t ya think?

We try to do this little Blogger Exchange Program here at Bear Goggles On. Like the foreign exchange program but without some smelly foreigner with a language barrier invading our house. Then again, I’ve never met Mike from Birds Fan. He was kind enough to take some time to answer some questions. Don’t worry Mike, I’m just playin. I’m sure you don’t have a language barrier. I answered some of Mike’s question for Birds Fan too. Check it out!

BearGogglesOn: The Eagles have looked pretty unstoppable the last couple of weeks. Is it all due to Michael Vick or is there someone else that has made a difference? Who is the next most dangerous weapon on Eagles offense that the Bears have to try to shut down?

BirdsFan: Michael Vick has been phenomenal, there’s no doubting that. He has made a lot of plays out of nothing. However, he’s been able to make a lot of plays due to the talent surrounding him. We’ve seen him throw some tremendous home-run balls this year, but DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin are the big play receivers that have been on the other end. Without these two, you wouldn’t see that deep ball being such a threat.

The guy that has developed into a huge threat on offense behind Vick is LeSean McCoy. He’s running the ball hard and is a huge threat catching passes out of the backfield. His coaches tend to think he looks for the big play too often, but he does have the ability to break one whenever he touches it. (more…)

Julius Peppers racked up a cornucopia of sacks against the Miami Dolphins last Thursday and was rewarded for his efforts. His three sack performance (8th three sack game of his career) earned him the NFC Defensive Player of the Week award for the fourth time in his career. It’s about time that he was recognized for his stellar play this season. The NFL also announced that Peppers is currently the leading voting getter in the NFC among defensive ends. A fitting ‘thank you’ from football fans around the country this time of year.

The NFL has announced today that the game time for the Week 12 matchup between the Chicago Bears and the Philadelphia Eagles at Soldier Field will be flexed. The game, originally scheduled for 12:00pm CST on November 28, has been moved to 3:15pm CST. This comes after the Bears big win against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday and the record-breaking performance by Michael Vick and the Eagles on Monday night, both wins moving the teams into a tie for first place in their respective divisions.

While both teams currently stand at 6-3, most people will probably heavily favor the Eagles. The Bears do have a few things going their way. They will be coming off an extended break after playing on Thursday night this week and the Eagles will be coming off a slightly shorter than normal week after playing on Sunday night against the New York Giants. Either way, the NFL sees this as a game worth watching. I’ll be hoping that intangibles play a factor and give the Bears an edge. It could be a cold, sloppy snow bowl at Soldier field.

Flex Note: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Baltimore Ravens game was also flexed to 3:15pm CST on November 28th. The changes were announced today because the NFL must announce flex scheduling changes at least 12 days prior to the game.
