While growing up in the south suburbs there was one thing I hoped for every Sunday right afternoon, and that was for my Dad not to hit any red lights on our way home from church so I wouldn’t miss any Walter Payton runs. The most disappointing Sunday ever was when we got home a little late from church and Walter was not running the football. After an entire series without seeing Walter run the ball (before internet and twitter) CBS finally ran the replay of Walter running into the ref and getting ejected from the game.

The other Bears story passed down from my Father was how he replaced Dick Butkus in the CVS lineup at both linebacker and fullback after Butkus graduated and went on to play at Illinois and oh by the way become the greatest middle linebacker of all time when he was drafted by the Bears. My dad will not talk much about this to anyone but me and my brother will always want him to tell us high school stories about Butkus and how mean was he even in high school.

Fast forward to today and I get to pass the torch of Chicago Bears football from father to son in Jacksonville Florida. I’m bringing my youngest son to his first Bears game, and hopefully 20 years from now he will tell his kids about the day his Dad brought him to see Bears legends Brian Urlacher, Lance Briggs, Julius Peppers and the Monsters of the Midway. Hopefully he will ask me after a Bears sack of Blaine Gabbert who the best pass rusher I ever saw play, and I will be able to tell him about Richard Dent and the 85 Bears.

Granted I wish we were going to Soldier Field, but the Gator Bowl, AllTell Stadium, or whatever it is called today will have to do on this Sunday afternoon. He is going to get the whole spectrum of a Bears game including tailgating (only root beers for him) and hopefully a big Bears win! My son may will never get to see Walter Payton play just like I never saw Dick Butkus play but like my Dads stories of Butkus he can listen to me talk all day about Sweetness. And in 20 years he will be able to tell his kids about Matt Forte, Cutler, and Marshall

I can’t wait for th 4;05 kickoff Sunday afternoon to see the Bears play and beat down Maurice Jones-Drew and the Jags, but it will be a great day passing on the excitement of a Bears Sunday to my son!

Look for us in Section 411!!!

DA BEARS!!!

Super Bowl XX MVP Richard Dent is happy for the Chicago Blackhawks on the Stanley Cup and all. Heck, he even watched the parade. But when it comes to Chicago’s ultimate championship team, there is no doubt in the Sack Man’s mind which team is #1:

“I don’t think it ranks up there with our championship. People had a swagger when they talked about our championship because they know we would go out and kick ass and take names and come home with a victory. There was no doubt, there was no worry. It was all about taking care of business. If (the Blackhawks) play like that over the next three or four years….then you can start talking about other stuff.”

With all due respect and proper deference to Dent and the ’85 Bears, there’s a reason they’re called the ’85 Bears – because they won ONE title in – you guessed it – 1985. If the Bears had come even close to the 85 team in subsequent years, we’d be talking about the 80′s Bears or the Bears dynasty like we talk about the 90′s Bulls or the Jordan dynasty.

So don’t go calling out the ‘Hawks and saying that they need to play like that over the next three or four years to start talking about other stuff. Let’s enjoy what they’ve done and let history be the judge of where they rank.

First and foremost, congratulations to the Saints and the city of New Orleans on a great win in a memorable Super Bowl XLIV.

Part of the whole Super Bowl hoopla are all the commercials and of course, as a die-hard Bears fan I wanted to see the Super Bowl Shuffle remake commercial by Boost Mobile. The 30 second spot that aired did not do justice to the full video that I uploaded from Boost Mobile’s website. Check it the commercial and then the full video after the jump:

Super Bowl XX MVP Richard Dent was denied in his fifth bid for enshrinement into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Dent, of course, was an integral cog of the ferocious Bears defense of the 80′s. All-time sacks leader Bruce Smith was selected in his first year of eligibility along with Wide receiver Bob Hayes, guard Randall McDaniel, linebacker Derrick Thomas, owner Ralph Wilson, and defensive back Rod Woodson to make up the Class of 2009 Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinees.

Dent’s time is definitely coming and I have no doubt that he will take his rightful place alongside teammates Mike Singletary and Dan Hampton from the vaunted ’85 Bears defense. The Colonel was a 4-time Pro Bowler and 1 time All Pro. At the time of his retirement, he was third all time with 137.5 sacks, behind Hall of Famers Reggie White and Bruce Smith.
