According to David Kaplan of CSNChicago.com, Terrell Owens wants to come play for Marc Trestman and your Chicago Bears.

Owens, who says he is in great shape, is looking to make a return to the NFL after not playing in 2012 and he wants to make that return with the Chicago Bears.

This is what Owens had to say while in Chicago to participate in McLegends charity basketball event that benefits the Ronald McDonald House of Chicago and Northwest Indiana.

I played my first early years in San Francisco with [Bears head coach Marc Trestman] and shortly after that, he left to do some things,” he said. “I haven’t talked to Marc in a long while. I know he’s gone on and done some things, now he’s back in the NFL. So, I never really thought about it until myself and Napoleon were talking about it earlier, but I would definitely welcome it if they would give it some serious consideration. To think about [Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall] on the other side and me on one side, that’s really dangerous. I’m keeping myself in shape just for any opportunity that may come about.”

Does TO really want to play again or is he just doing lip service for the media. Let’s look at the pros and cons of TO coming to the Bears.

Pros

Marc Trestman was the offensive coordinator in San Francisco when TO was there. Trestman knows TO and TO knows Marc Trestman’s offense.

TO would only get the veteran minimum and not hit the salary cap very hard.

Cons

TO is old. Why would the Bears sign a 39 year old receiver when you can draft someone you can groom out of college.

TO is a distraction. The guy needs way too much attention.

TO is not a leader.

If the Bears were unwilling to bring back Brian Urlacher, why would they ever consider signing Terrell Owens? Owens is a disease and would only poison the locker room. The Bears need to sign a stretch the field receiver and TO is a “pout if I don’t get the ball” type of receiver. It would be a move that would keep me scratching my head for a long time. Phil Emery, just say “No” to TO.

No, I did not make those tweets up, look them up for yourself…the only thing slightly off is I am working in SE Asia right now, so the time stamps look a little funny, so back up those times by 13 hours. Yes, on a Sunday night/Monday morning in Chicago, T.O., Cutler and Olsen were hanging out at Underground and Olsen goes on to invite T.O. to join them at the beach tomorrow…maybe this is just a boys’ night out, but T.O., Cutler and Olsen don’t seem like they would just be “hanging out” except maybe for a recruiting trip???

Stay tuned…it’s probably nothing, but worth typing a few sentences to get my guy, Boomer, off my back for going dark for a while…until next time…

It should come as no surprise that Lovie Smith and Jerry Angelo are on a short leash. With three straight seasons with no playoffs, the Bears have pulled out all of the stops with some bold free agent moves. So why not go all-in and take a shot at a desperate and talented, though potentially combustible wide receiver? With high risk comes high reward. The Bears need to go get Terrell Owens.

Bears Should Sign T.O. - Bear Goggles On - Bear Goggles On - A Chicago Bears Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and more.

I can’t believe I just wrote that headline for this post. I can’t believe I’m actually considering this. I’ve been on record before saying there is no way the Bears should even consider T.O., but another lost, playoff-less season has me changing my tune.

Am I crazy? Absolutely. But before you totally dismiss this, hear me out.

Cutler likes ‘em big

They say size doesn’t matter. Yeah right. Tell that to JC (or your girlfriend). You could tell about halfway through the 2009 campaign that he was sick to death of throwing to the midget – sorry, little people – wide receivers that constituted the Bears’ roster. The biggest wide receiver on the Bears last season was Devin Aromashodu, at an unimpressive 6’1″ and a scrawny 201 pounds and you saw what he and Cutler were able to accomplish in just a few games when the Bears braintrust finally wised up and got DA on the field. T.O. is listed a 6’3″ at a stout 224. As much as it’s the height, it’s the weight that makes T.O. a valuable asset. He can take that big body and battle for jump balls. He can be the go-get-it guy Jay Cutler has lusted after since he arrived.

In Remission

Everyone this side of Mike Ditka has called Owens a locker room cancer. I’m here to tell you that the cancer is in remission. Did anyone hear a peep out of T.O. last year? Maybe it was the fact that he was playing in the news vortex of the universe (Buffalo) but I don’t think so.

The free agent market has been open for business for a while now, yet Owens is still on the market. That’s enough to humble even the gigantic Terrell Owens ego. (more…)

One Gaines was added and another was lost. In order to make room for defensive end Gaines Adams, the Bears released 4th tight end Michael Gaines. Something symmetrical about that, huh? Gaines was brought in during the offseason to compete and tight end and essentially push Kellen Davis. Michael Gaines was considered to be a strong run-blocker, but his role was limited this season. Four tight ends is a little excessive, so it’s not a big surprise that Gaines was let go.

Always a believer in building through the draft, Jerry Angelo must be turning over a new leaf after trading the Bears 2010 2nd round pick to Tampa Bay for DE Gaines Adams. Adams was drafted 4th overall in the 2007 draft and has underwhelmed in the NFL to this point with only 13.5 sacks during his time in the NFL. I am not sure what this trade signifies, but if Adams can produce a little, perhaps Adewale Ogunleye should hire a real estate agent since it could spell the end of the road in Chicago for #93 after this season.

I have even read some comments on the internet about this trade that some think this trade is the first step in the Bears landing Terrell Owens. Could it be??? I think you all know my position on that idea, but stick with me on this…the theories out there would suggest that the Bills were eyeing the Bears 2010 2nd round pick for T.O. and that the Bears traded for Adams, so the best they could give would be a 3rd rounder, but since the Bears now have Adams, they could possibly deal Adewale and a lesser draft pick to get T.O…you got all that??? I really doubt that is what Jerry is thinking, but who knows…

In theory, I think this is a good deal IF and ONLY IF Rod Marinelli can get this kid back to being the player that warranted the #4 pick overall in 2007 since we will enter the 2010 draft again without a 1st or 2nd round draft pick. Perhaps, Gaines Adams will be to us what Cedric Benson (I miss Ced and so does Boomer) is to the Bengals…a 4th overall selection that needed a change of scenery to get things going for their career. If that is the case, then maybe this is not such a bad deal…for Jerry’s sake, I hope he knows what he is doing, because for the “Master Drafter,” he is emptying out the draft cupboards quite liberally these days.

We should get our first look at Adams on Sunday night in Atlanta. Let’s hope for a good first impression.

UPDATE: The Tribune’s Vaughn McClure is reporting that Adams will be inactive on Sunday. Probably best not to rush. Even though, in theory, he knows the Bears’ scheme, they would have to cut someone off the 53-man roster to activate him.

Can I Get an Amen???

The DeCon has spoken…so let it be written…so let it be done…

Speaking of the draft, it’s never too early for Jerry Angelo to be working on it. With the luck Jerry’s had with his high picks, do you think he’s over-analyzing a bit? Just wing it, Jer!

Cedric Benson and Kyle Orton have been making the headlines, but there are enough ex-Bears out there to start a whole offense. David Haugh is putting together the All Ex-Bears Offense. No, it’s not a joke. Might as well throw in Rex Grossman as the backup QB and soon-to-be ex Bills coach Dick Jauron to lead this band of merry men.

And while we’ve got the Bills on our minds, let’s please put all the TO nonsense to bed. Besides being a cancer in the locker room, TO stands for Too Old. He’s sneaking up on 36 which is dinosaur-old for football players and bloggers alike. Besides, we’ve already got a #81. Who needs Owens when you’ve got Rashied Davis?

The Bears are inching up in ESPN’s Power Rankings without even playing last week while the Ebony Bird has some rankings of his own.

The mother ship has launched a new daily feature called the Everything Power Rankings that brings you the hottest stories from around the web with a twist. Check ‘em out! Every day.

Outside of the Bears universe, Deadspin has uncovered the Favre-mobile. You half expect Favre to hop out in a Batman costume and Adrian Peterson to be sportin’ the Robin. On the other end of the spectrum, you’ve got this douche-bag who’s can’t even pop for a new Favre jersey. It’s not looking too promising for the Lions as they prepare for the Packers. How fun would it be if they could pull it off and push the Pack down to the bottom of the NFC North standings?

BEAR DOWN!!!

Through the month of October, my usual BEAR DOWN signoff will be in pink to raise awareness for National Breast Cancer Awareness month.

I’m posting this on behalf of my guy, The DeCon, while the mother ship is still trying to get him set up on the network. He’ll be doing a weekly Fantasy Football post here to give you fantasy football junkies some great insight. This guy is one of the founding fathers of fantasy football. He was playing fantasy with paper and pen, before the internet. Yes, he’s old, but that just means he’s wise. On with the show:

I first want to extend my thanks to the FanSided Network and Boomer for allowing me to be a part of this great forum. I will, for blog purposes, be known as The DeCon to protect my day job. It is a nickname a few use for me and it helps with the theme of the blog.

Hopefully, I will provide some insight into the world of fantasy football and maybe even some laughs along the way. I have been playing fantasy football since the days when Sterling Sharpe was a Top 3 pick and I like to think I know a little about it.

Each week, at least until my third child is born, at which time I will likely need a week off; I will give you some fantasy nuggets to consider. I will pay special attention to our Beloved Bears as well as our NFC Division foes, but I will try to give you some other players to consider. Enough with the intro, let’s get on with The DeCon’s Preachin’ from the Pulpit for Week 1.

Stone Tablet Locks – chisel these guys in stone as MUST PLAYS this week.

1) Matt Forte @ GB – he was likely a top 3 pick in your draft and one general rule I have is you never sit a player you draft in the first round, especially the first week. Last year in 2 games against the Pack, Forte had a combined 137 yds rushing and 68 yds receiving on 8 catches with a TD. Not the greatest of numbers, but with the Pack’s switch to a 3-4 defense and the Bears O-line seemingly gelling just fine, I expect some lanes to be opened up for the big fella from Tulane. Add to that the fact that he won’t have to face 8 or 9 in the box because of the Bears’ new Pro Bowl QB and I think Forte is a 2 Tablet Lock all season long. (more…)

The Buffalo Bills signed Terrell Owens on Saturday after his release by the Dallas Cowboyslate last week. This is a dome-scratcher on many levels. Most of all, it would surprise me if former Bears coach, the mild mannered, calm and quiet Dick Jauron had any input on this.

Jauron appeared to sleepwalk his way through his years patrolling the Chicago sidelines. He wasn’t exactly a rah-rah or in-your-face kind of guy and shunned controversy and confrontation like Jerry Angelo shuns free agent pickups.

Among the many reasons I hated the idea of signing T.O. was that without strong leadership and a well-respected quarterback, T.O. could eat a team alive. The Bills QB situation appears no better than the Bears’, Jauron is hardly firm enough to quench any T.O. fires and the Bills hardly possess a Hall-of-Famer-in-waiting like a Peyton Manning or Brett Favre to command Owens’ respect.

Some people I’ve talked to have made the Dennis Rodman comparison. Bulls fans all hated Rodman, especially when he was the core of the Bad Boys Piston teams that used to beat up the Bulls in the late 80′s, but we quickly forgave the sins of the past when he was on our team. I get it. There are many players that you love to hate; when they’re on the opponent, they are the enemy, but when they join your team, they are beloved.

The distinct difference between T.O. and Rodman is that the 90′s Bulls had Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Phil Jackson and 3 rings when Rodman brought his circus to town. The Bills have none of those; no one to keep that megalomaniac in check.

Selfishly, I wish T.O. had inked with the Bears, only because this blog would write itself each day with the sideshow that is T.O. Then again, it wouldn’t be about the Bears, it would be about Owens, which is exactly what would happen in the locker room and on the field. Have fun with that Buffalo.
