After the loss of Cameron Meredith, the Chicago Bears wide receiver depth chart became very empty. It became much too obvious that this team had a glaring need at wide receiver entering the draft. Rather than force themselves into a corner, the team is adding veteran presences who can compete in camp.

First, the team brought in Bennie Fowler. Now, it is Marlon Brown.

As highlighted, not even Fowler is the true replacement for Meredith. Brown brings a lot less to be desired than Fowler. At 6’5″, 216 pounds, it is pretty clear what Marlon Brown brings to the table.

He is tall and he can be a red zone threat. However, he has not made an NFL roster since 2015, and that was with the Ravens, who haven’t had a receiver since well before then.

In 2013, Brown was an undrafted free agent who caught seven touchdowns for the Ravens as a rookie. He caught 49 passes for 524 yards. From there, not much. He stuck with the Ravens over the next two seasons but caught 38 passes for 367 yards without a single touchdown combined over that span.

He spent some time in Denver during the 2016 season but was quiet all of last year. The fact of the matter is that this is a depth piece who could potentially make the team as a fifth receiver who can help in the red zone. If Kevin White gets hurt, or if the draft board does not go their way, they at least are not completely without a place to turn.
