No. 3: How will the front office and coaching staff be impacted by the decision?

This quarterback competition has stretched out longer than a Mike Martz seven-step drop. It’s unclear what either quarterback can do at this point to definitively win the job, but it is reassuring that Matt Nagy made note of their being no “agenda” in any of this.

In a way, it feels the Bears’ front office would be more liberated in giving the Opening Day job to Trubisky, especially if Foles hasn’t done enough in the eyes of those at Halas Hall to definitively put himself over the top. It would mean the Bears went out and actually got competition, and their 2017 No. 2 pick went out and slew the first of his demons.

It’s reminiscent of one of those old moments in Vince McMahon’s WWE storylines, where no matter how well they built up one opponent, you sort of knew in the back of your mind who would prevail.

You can never be too sure, but as an outsider, it seems like the writing could be on the wall. A few days ago on The Athletic’s Hoge and Jahns podcast, they discussed how Nagy “dismissed” two of Trubisky’s interceptions. And from what we can grasp, most people have been willing to conclude Foles has been slightly better.

So, what’s the wait?

I think it’s more fulfilling for Ryan Pace and the Bears’ front office to have Trubisky win this, too. It, on the surface at least, rights their decision.

Morale-wise, it seems safer, too. Foles has a history of being an elite reserve, so him holding the clipboard Week One does little to negatively impact his reputation.

For Trubisky, it means that he’s been surrounded around the same system and receivers since 2018, give-or-take, and he just lost his job to a quarterback that’s been here for five months in a pandemic situation. And wouldn’t that make for quite the storyline?
