Chicago Bears’ cheap free agency quarterback target: Jameis Winston
The former first-overall pick in 2015 additionally saw himself settling to be a backup on another team for an enormous pay cut. Jameis Winston signed with the New Orleans Saints to backup future Hall-of-Fame quarterback Drew Brees, or so he thought.
Drew Brees went down to injury midway through the season and Winston thought he was the backup as he came in for Brees when Brees went down. The next week though, Sean Payton rolled with gadget-player Taysom Hill as his quarterback likely upsetting the former Buccaneers’ quarterback.
Winston has been promised to get the chance to start when Brees retires which could be right after this season, but would he even want to try if he already lost the job to Hill this year? Winston could be almost guaranteed a starting job in Chicago immediately if the Bears pursue him this season.
It’s hard to tell how much he would cost, but he would likely come cheap given the last season he started he threw 30 interceptions. Winston may be turnover-heavy, but a season with Sean Payton as his coach and Brees as his mentor could have at least cooled him down. He’s definitely worth the upside for the right price.
