Chicago Bears 2019 NFL Draft

Chicago Bears trade up to select RB David Montgomery

Chicago Bears receive:

  • No. 73 pick – RB David Montgomery
  • No. 205 pick – CB Duke Shelley

New England Patriots receive:

  • No. 87 pick – RB Damien Harris
  • No. 162 pick – Got traded around to multiple teams
  • No. 125 pick (2020) – Traded to New York Jets who selected QB James Morgan

This was a nice haul for the Chicago Bears. The Bears brought in David Montgomery who took major strides this past season despite playing behind a poor offensive line, and they got Duke Shelley who may be the Bears’ starting nickel corner this next season. Montgomery has been great for the Bears and stepped up big time in 2020 when Cohen went down to an injury early in the season. Montgomery essentially became a full workhorse running back.

Damien Harris hasn’t played much for the New England Patriots due to injury and competition. He has to compete with Sony Michel, James White, and Rex Burkhead with touches. Harris has been solid though when given the touches. I’d say both won this trade but leaning the Bears.

Chicago Bears 2020 NFL Draft

Chicago Bears trade future draft capital to select OLB Trevis Gipson

Chicago Bears receive:

  • No. 155 pick – OLB Trevis Gipson

Minnesota Vikings receive:

  • No. 125 pick (2021) – To be determined

This trade obviously doesn’t have much to say. Trevis Gipson as a rookie last season didn’t see the field much. He is a project outside linebacker that showed promise coming out of Tulsa. He saw some time near the end of the season, but Gipson struggled in his increased playing time. The Vikings haven’t made their selection yet either. This trade looks silly on paper due to the pick numbers, but future draft capital is always cheaper than current draft picks. Let’s hope to see more Gipson action in 2021.
