Chicago Bears Free Agent Target: Tyler Eifert, TE

Tyler Eifert was a veteran free agent I had mentioned for the Bears last season. This was before the team signed Jimmy Graham and also should they not draft a tight end. Well, both happened, but now the Bears could use the depth.

Right now, the Chicago Bears depth chart at tight end is Jimmy Graham as TE1 and Cole Kmet as TE2. We might actually see more of a shift as Kmet takes over the starting spot and Graham is the oft-used backup. Or, we could even see Jimmy Graham getting cut to save $7 million in cap space. No matter if the tight end room sees Graham go or if he stays, Tyler Eifert (or someone similar — Jesse James, Virgil Green or Geoff Swaim are options) should be signed.

Last season Eifert proved he can still play despite his injury history. Eifert saw 60 targets and came down with 36 of them for a 60% catch rate percentage. He gained 349 yards and scored two touchdowns. Should the Chicago Bears sign Eifert, he would not see as many targets, but I think he could be more efficient with them. Eifert would come with plenty of familiarity having played under Bill Lazor and also catching passes from Andy Dalton while in Cincinnati.
