The Chicago Bears should cut Tarik Cohen

This one is not going to go over well. Honestly, I hate even writing it. I am a huge Tarik Cohen fan. He’s one of my favorite follows on Twitter and one of my favorite underdogs to root for with the Chicago Bears over the last few years. I’ll never get the image of him flipping and catching footballs out of my head when the team drafted him back in 2017. He earned his contract extension, but unfortunately, he also hasn’t been available for the last two years.

Cohen saw a three-year contract extension worth $17.25 million in 2020 but only played in three games before ending his season with a torn ACL. He was supposed to be back this year, but setbacks cost him the full 2021 season as well. I’d love to see a healthy Tarik Cohen on the field, but after missing nearly two full seasons, I think it’s time he takes his talents to a new team.

Again, I hate writing it. Saying it seems harsh in this situation, but this is a business and this team needs to improve. Running backs are just not as valuable in the NFL as they used to be. High-powered passing offenses are the bread and butter.

With David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert in place for the 2022 season, Cohen is replaceable. He’s due to make $5.75 million this year and that’s the eighth-highest salary (seventh-highest after cutting Goldman) on the team. Cutting Cohen can save the team $2.25 million or $4 million if it’s designated as a post-June 1 cut. That gives the team $46 to $48 million to work with in free agency.
