Chicago Bears GM Candidate: 2
Omar Khan – Steelers, Vice President of Football and Business Administration

Another interview that took place yesterday was with Stelers vice president of football and business adminstration, Omar Khan. For the longest time, I have had Omar Khan in my top three. It was originally Ed Dodds, Khan and Rick Smith. Reports are that Smith doesn’t seem as ready to return this offseason as some may have believed. If you are paying close attention, you might be wondering then if Rick Smith and Ed Dodds are no longer an option, why isn’t Omar Khan at the top of the rankings?

Well, one name wasn’t on the list of candidates when I createad my original rankings. After looking into him further, that candidate is someone I’d prefer of Omar Khan just because he is more of a football mind. This is not to say that Khan doesn’t know football. he’s been being groomed to take over for Kevin Colbert when he retires. This is rumored to be happening after the 2022 NFL Draft. It sounds as though that if Colbert does retire, the Steelers are most likely to give the position to pro scouting director Brandon Hunt.

Now, this is not a guarantee. Omar Khan is and has been well respected among the NFL community. The Steelers are an organization that I’d imagine the Chicago Bears look up to greatly. The Steelers have had great success over the last two decades. During that time, the team has had 16 winning seasons, 13 playoff appearances and two Super Bowl victories. Chicago Bears could only dream of this outcome.

Khan has been with the Steelers for 21 years. Prio to that he spent some time with the New Orleans Saints. He has been a part of those 16 winning seasons and two Super Bowls. The Steelers highly regard him too — which means a lot.

He is more known as a “cap specialst” than a football mind, but he has been around one of the most successful organizations and I don’t doubt his ability to understand the game of football and what a successful prospect or veteran free agent looks like. . He was the Steelers’ director of football adminsitration for six years before stepping into his current role.

To be honest, I’d love it if he was given a president of football operations role, but that ship seems to have sailed with only a shift from Ted Phillips to George McCaskey being announced. Now, it’s a matter of determining if Khan could be a true general manager. If the new GM is to be in charge of as much as McCaskey hinted, maybe Khan really is the right guy for the job.

As of now, Khan has not been rumored to receive a second interview the same way that Morocco Brown has been.
