Luke Getsy is saying all the right things about the Chicago Bears and Justin Fields

Luke Getsy was never a play-caller in Green Bay behind Nathaniel Hackett and Matt LaFleur. He is trying to take a similar approach to Matt LaFleur who left the Rams to prove himself calling plays for a team that has a defensive-minded head coach. Getsy will have nearly full control of the offense now in Chicago and he met with the media for the first time today.

There were a few moments where I heard Luke Getsy speak and it reminded me of Matt Nagy. The way he talked about his passion and the word salad he used at times to describe what he wanted to do with the offense. However, that feeling of similarity between the two lasted only a couple of seconds as Luke Getsy went on to sound like the exact opposite of Matt Nagy.

How often did we hear Matt Nagy speak about how he was going to create a scheme on offense and it would take a few years to learn? Do you remember how we heard about the Offense 101 and then it was going to be Offense 202 in year two? We were promised great results, but instead, we saw failure after failure to the point players were not buying into the system knowing it did not work — including Nick Foles, Andy Dalton and probably even Justin Fields.

Luke Getsy did not talk about a specific scheme though. Instead, his first and what seemed to be the most important part of his offense was getting to know the players. He wants to get a feel for who they are, what drives them, and how they learn. He will teach them what needs to be taught, but they will build the offense together rather than forcing them into a specific scheme. Hello. This is what most fans have been screaming for over the last three to four years under Nagy.

Luke Getsy went on talk about how this is a quarterback-driven league and he plans to build the offense around Justin Fields. Once they determine what to do to exploit Fields’ specific strengths, then they will focus on what the rest of the personnel does well. This is how they plan to build an identity on offense — something Matt Nagy was never able to do. I have faith that Luke Getsy gets it right though with how he spoke about Justin Fields and not forcing a scheme on his players.

Finally, it also sounded to me that Luke Getsy is willing to adapt and evolve. Another area that Matt Nagy struggled with over his four years here. All of this sounds great and is a breath of fresh air for us Chicago Bears fans. Now, we just need to hope that it all comes together and becomes more than just words. We need to see results and I’m starting to come around to the idea that this team will win more games than many expected in the regime’s first year. How does 10 wins sound?
