Chicago Bears Target No. 2: Abraham Lucas, OT – WSU

The Bears’ willingness to draft an offensive tackle will likely depend on how confident they are in Larry Borom’s development. Borom started eight and appeared in 10 games as a rookie, but he remains largely an unknown. As a former offensive lineman, Ryan Poles understands the importance of a good offensive line, especially for a young quarterback. If he chooses to use an early pick on the position, Abraham Lucas would be a prime candidate.

Lucas comes in at a massive 6’7 319 pounds. He has more than enough size and length to play tackle at the NFL level and has the experience to as well. Lucas played in Washington State’s air raid offense and has amassed over 2,000 snaps in pass protection there. However, the high volume of pass blocking reps came at the expense of experience in the run game. Lucas was solid as a run blocker in college, but there isn’t enough tape to know for sure.

The biggest objection to drafting Lucas is that he isn’t the most refined prospect. Washington State’s scheme is far from a pro-style offense and what Lucas was asked to do there was drastically different from what he’ll be asked to do in the NFL.

At the end of the day,  Lucas has the size and skills necessary to be a quality NFL player and could give the Bears another talented youngster on the outside.
