2022 Chicago Bears Training Camp Guide: Players and storylines to watch
By Ryan Olson
1. Chicago Bears Storyline: The offensive line and Teven Jenkins
The offensive line was without a doubt a big problem with the Bears in 2021, as they for whatever reason cut their best offensive lineman in Charles Leno. Leno was a longtime Bear and former pro-bowler who graded out as a top three pass protector at a premium position. The Bears will also be without their top offensive lineman from the 2021 season Jason Peters as he is very old and is unlikely to return to the Bears.
Lucas Patrick was brought in to presumably play center, after finding himself in a starting role for the Green Bay Packers. Outside from Patrick and Cody Whitehair, the Bears’ offensive line is completely wide open for the taking.
Players that will be in the mix for a starting job would be recently signed Michael Schofield who is a penalty-free guard who was a good pass blocker for the Chargers last season. Larry Borom contributed in a big way for the Bears after filling in for an injured Bears offensive line in 2021.
The most interesting part of the Bears’ offensive line would be Teven Jenkins and Braxton Jones, who are two high-ceiling, young linemen who could be total wildcards for the Chicago Bears. Both Jones and Jenkins have good tools but are very raw.
Jones took everyone by surprise after getting tons of first-team reps at OTAs earlier this summer and graded very well at Southern Utah during his college days. We don’t know what to expect from Jones after being drafted in the fifth round because he is still very raw and didn’t go up against any premier competition in college. However, the tools are there and we can assume the coaches believe in him after giving him first-team snaps.
Teven Jenkins who was a very good player at Oklahoma State had a rough rookie season. He racked up tons of penalties in his few appearances. Jenkins had an uphill battle all offseason after a back injury, and switching positions to left tackle, after being a right tackle for his whole college career. I was very high on Jenkins as a prospect but his rookie reason was not encouraging. Jenkins was also receiving second-team reps at OTAs which is very discouraging. Jenkins, who had a rough first season, could be a very good player if he could overcome all of his rookie schedules.
