The Chicago Bears could use the help of Blake Martinez on defense

The Chicago Bears are struggling in the run game on defense. They are currently last in Defensive DVOA vs. the run. Roquan Smith looks like a guy who skipped most of the offseason. He missed practice for the second day in a row today with a hip injury, but Alan Williams expects him to be available for Sunday.

Is it the hip injury that slowed Roquan Smith down vs. the Packers or is it that he has yet to find his groove after missing most of training camp? Nicholas Morrow has not been great either. In fact, more people are giving Smith more flack, but Morrow has been bad in pass coverage, while Smith has remained up to his standards.

Over two games, Smith is averaging 10 combined tackles (six solos) per game and only allowing 55.6 percent of his targets to be completed. Morrow on the other hand is averaging 8.5 combined tackles (six solos) but allowing 80 percent of his targets to go for completions. Behind these two are Matt Adams and undrafted free agent Jack Sanborn. The Chicago Bears should consider bringing in the likes of Blake Martinez for a tryout. Martinez has recently visited the Ravens and is scheduled to meet with the Raiders. He’s only 28 and would make a nice addition to the defense.

Martinez has had an up-and-down career, but when he is on point, he is one of the better linebackers in the NFL. I’m honestly surprised the Giants released him but not surprised that he’s already receiving so much interest. If he’s good enough for the Ravens and Raiders, he’s good enough for a struggling Bears defense — especially if Smith might miss some time with this hip injury.
