Chicago Bears Week 15 Winner No. 3: Defensive Line

The Bears only had one sack in this game, and it came from a backup linebacker in Joe Thomas. That right there would usually mean that the defensive line did not have a great game. Since they have been so bad this year as a unit, this game was actually a win for the defensive front.

There was some consistent pressure on Hurts, especially in the first half. They forced him out of the pocket and contained his scrambles well. The only big runs Hurts had come off designed runs. They set the edge well and tried to keep Hurts in the pocket. Unfortunately, the slight improvement was not nearly enough to do much against the Eagles’ offensive machine. Hurts figured things out as the game went on and by then the Bears really had no answer.

A big win from this game was the run defense. The Bears made it a very rough day for the Eagles’ running backs. Miles Sanders, Kenneth Gainwell, and Boston Scott combined for only 47 yards on 14 carries. The Eagles needed to pass the ball a lot in this one because the Bears not only stopped runs up the middle, but they did an unusually good job of containing outside runs.

Give credit to Trevis Gipson and Al-Quadin Muhammad for their strong presence on the edge in run defense. They have been weak in that area this season, so this was a big win from this week. The unit played together and made a presence on the line of scrimmage. They have not done this much this year, so hopefully, it carries over to the final weeks of the season.

The Chicago Bears played hard against the Eagles and lost another close game. Nobody expected the Bears to win, but it was great to see the players fight hard all game. The defense stepped up in a big way forcing three turnovers, and their energy helped the Bears stay with Philadelphia for most of the game. With more talent, next season these close games will hopefully go in the Bears’ favor.
