The NFL Draft is exciting for fans and players entering the NFL. It is something new, a breath of fresh air. However, for what is coming in, there is always something going out and getting replaced. These are the harsh realities of the NFL.
Which players on the Chicago Bears may have seen their status take a dip after draft weekend?
3. The Chicago Bears did not trust Tyler Scott
Entering the draft, Tyler Scott was in a good spot as the Bears' third wide receiver. However, that quickly changed with the ninth overall pick. The big issue is how good Rome Odunze is and will be. The team has D.J. Moore, who is obviously the top receiver on the roster, and then there is Keenan Allen, who will fill in at the slot.
Chicago drafted Scott to replace Darnell Mooney in the slot, but with a new quarterback and coordinator, he does not have much of a fit. Now, he is the fourth wide receiver, and when you look at the names ahead of him, it is hard to think of a player who should ever lose snaps so that Scott can rotate into the mix.
Scott is likely to finish two full seasons with under 500 yards receiving. Maybe if Keenan Allen is gone after this year, there is a chance for Scott to find himself a role in his third NFL season, but the path to him being successful on the Bears during his rookie contract just got a lot more narrow.
2. Will the Chicago Bears cut Larry Borom?
When Braxton Jones went down with an injury early into last season, the team had to call on Larry Borom to start at left tackle. Borom did not handle that well, and it became a huge reason the Bears got off to such a slow start last year.
The team is not going down that road anymore. First, they signed a couple of veterans. Matt Pryor is expected to play guard, but he can slide to tackle if needed. He may not be asked to, though. That is because they signed Jake Curhan, who may be a backup, but he comes from Seattle, where he has experience with Shane Waldron.
The Bears also drafted Kiran Amegadje in the third round. He is more of a projectable player than an instant fix, but he is going to make the roster. If the Bears keep Braxton Jones, Darnell Wright, Curhan, and Amegadije, we will be on four tackles before we even mention Larry Borom. There is a good chance he will get released this offseason.
1. The Chicago Bears have already given up on Dominique Robinson
When the Bears drafted Dominique Robinson, the first draft that Ryan Poles had, it was known that he was swinging on the upside. Robinson had limited play as an edge rusher, which is why he fell to the fifth round. However, he had the athletic traits that could have led to more.
That did not happen, though. He was a project in year one, but the issue is that he got worse in year two. Eventually, the team had to bench him for Khalid Kareem. Now, Kareem is back. Beyond that, they added Jacob Martin and drafted Austin Booker.
At first, it looked like Robinson had a real chance of being a winner when the team selected a punter for their final pick. However, they traded a future pick to jump back into this draft and grab Booker, which shows that they do not want to see Robinson on the NFL field again. Maybe he will show up to training camp as a new man and look a lot better. The more likely scenario is that the team allows him to find a new home after letting him go or asking him to join the practice squad.
