The laundry list of items wrong with this Chicago Bears team would take quite a while to sort through.
At 0-2, the Bears look just like they did a year ago, only after having added a good amount of talent over this last offseason. For Chicago to turn things around, they're going to need a few things done differently.
First and foremost, Luke Getsy either has to go, or figure it out in a hurry. But, that's a topic for another day.
If Chicago wants to shore up some areas with additional talent before it's too late, though, they could consider these four trades.
1. The Chicago Bears should trade for Kevin Strong
The Bears still need help along their defensive line, especially on the interior. While they have Zacch Pickens and Gervon Dexter waiting to earn additional snaps as rookies, the Bears continue to play Justin Jones and Andrew Billings who have not had the best start to the year.
One underrated defensive lineman the Bears could trade for comes from the Arizona Cardinals, who are likely going to be tanking the season away in preparation for the no. 1 draft ick next year. Kevin Strong, a 27-year-old veteran, has had a great start to his season in Arizona.
He's been a bright spot amongst an otherwise very mediocre, if not all-out bad, Cardinals football team.
In this deal, the Bears would trade a future sixth rounder to Arizona for Strong. The fifth-year veteran is off to a nice start this season and pacing for his most productive year yet in the NFL.
2. The Chicago Bears should trade for Tavierre Thomas
One area where the Bears are hurting greatly is at nickel corner. Second-year pro and starter Kyler Gordon was placed on injured reserve prior to Week 2 with a hand injury. That means he will miss a minimum of four games before the Bears can bring him back.
Backup nickel corner Josh Blackwell was also out versus the Bucs with a hamstring injury, so the Bears are quite thin there. One option they have is to trade for a guy like Houston Texans nickel Tavierre Thomas.
Thomas is Pro Football Focus' top graded cornerback in all of football through two weeks of the season, and he has earned a coverage grade of 90.0, which is outstanding. Thomas is only allowing 5.3 yards per reception, has been credited with seven stops and 12 total tackles.
Thomas is on a one-year deal with the Texans, and at 27 years old still has plenty of football left in him. The Bears could flip a late pick in next year's draft or the following year to Houston in exchange for his services, and thus have much better depth there going forward.
3. The Chicago Bears should trade for Mike Evans
Through two weeks, the Bears have not utilized D.J. Moore the way they should be using him. A lot of that falls on Luke Getsy, who has made quite a few questionable play calls in such a short time span. But, if the Bears truly wanted to go all-in on turning things around this year, they'd start feeding him the ball more.
In addition, they could go out and trade for Bucs wide receiver Mike Evans. In a couple of games, already, Chase Claypool has put forth some suspect effort. It was nice to see him get into the end zone as a Bear, finally, last week. But, his future with the team is still in a lot of doubt.
The Bears could send Claypool, along with a fourth-round pick, in exchange for Evans. Evans is in the final year of his contract, just like Claypool, but the Bears would wind up working out a new deal for the 10-year veteran in order to keep he and Moore around for the foreseeable future.
At that point, if Fields truly isn't the guy for this team, at least the next quarterback would have a ridiculous arsenal of weapons to work with.
4. The Chicago Bears should trade for Danielle Hunter
Finally, if you watched the game against Tampa Bay, you would have noticed the Bears had an impossible time bringing down Baker Mayfield. Their pass rush did get home a few times, but failed to sack him in the end at all.
One player who has been involved in trade rumors over the last year or so is Minnesota Vikings edge rusher Danielle Hunter. This is Hunter's age 29 season and he has two years remaining on his current contract.
Minnesota has been trying their best to shed some salary over the last year or so, and this is another way they could do it. It sounds crazy, but the Vikings are also 0-2, and if they continue losing, you never know what they could wind up doing in order to turn things around for 2024.
The Bears would then have Hunter along with Yannick Ngakoue as their top two edge defenders, which would be a whole lot better tandem than what they would have trotted out had the season begun in July. And, before you mention an inner division trade, remember, the Vikings and Lions pulled one off last year involving T.J. Hockenson.
