For all the talk there was about the NFC North being one of the best divisions in football, two games into the 2024 NFL season, that seems to have been an overreaction.

One of the biggest reasons that seems to be an overreaction is that the Chicago Bears are closer to being the same version of the team they were last season than the team that entered the 2024 season with the expectation of returning to the playoffs.

We've also been pretty critical of the Minnesota Vikings throughout these power rankings, and the time may have come for an apology. The Vikings are the only undefeated team in the NFC North, and their victory on Sunday saw them climb in our latest power rankings.

NFC North Power Rankings Week 3

1. Detroit Lions (Last Week: 1)

Week 2 Result: Loss against Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 20-16

The Lions have opened the 2024 season with consecutive rematches against opponents they faced in the playoffs last season. The Lions won in overtime against the Los Angeles Rams last week but fell short to the Buccaneers on Sunday.

The biggest reason why the Lions keep their ranking at the top of the NFC North is because of the opponents they have played. The Lions opened their season against playoff teams from the 2023 season and were victorious against a Rams that may be regressing this season. The Buccaneers could be a threat in the NFC and their matchup with the Lions could be repeated in January.

2. Minnesota Vikings (3)

Week 2 result: Win against San Francisco 49ers, 23-17

The Minnesota Vikings might be real. For all the talk of the Green Bay Packers (we will get to them) being able to insert any quarterback into their system and finding success, Vikings' head coach Kevin O'Connell is proving to be able to do the same.

Sam Darnold was terrific against his former team on Sunday. Darnold threw for two touchdowns in the Vikings' upset win over the 49ers, and if this is the quarterback play Minnesota gets throughout the season, they will be a team to fear. Throughout all the talk this past offseason that the Vikings were taking a bridge year with no expectation of being a threat in the NFC, the team remained confident in their ability to contend. If Darnold continues on this trend, the Vikings will be a difficult matchup for any team.

3. Green Bay Packers (4)

Week 2 result: Win against Indianapolis Colts, 16-10

Sunday's game is the exact reason why Matt LaFleur is one of the greatest offensive minds in the NFL. Despite all the questions of Malik Willis throwing the ball, LaFleur drew up an excellent gameplan for his backup quarterback starting in place of Jordan Love. Willis completed 12 of 14 passes on Sunday while totaling 122 passing yards and a touchdown.

It was a game that highlighted the major difference between the Packers' coaching staff and the Bears' coaching staff. Regardless of the quarterback, LaFleur puts his quarterbacks in not only a position to be comfortable but a position to succeed. The same has yet to be proven true about the Bears and their coaching staff.

Even better news for the Packers, Jordan Love's MCL sprain isn't severe. There is some talk that Love could be ready to return in Week 3 for the Packers.

4. Chicago Bears (2)

Week 2 result: Loss against Houston Texans, 19-13

The score does not represent just how wide the gap is between where the Bears are and where the Texans are. The Bears were getting dominated in the trenches as the Texans' offensive line had their way with the Bears' offensive line. Had it known been a lack of discipline, the Texans would have routed the Bears on Sunday night.

As long as the Bears have Caleb Williams running for his life, the team can not be taken seriously. Even more problematic is the fact that the Bears ignored upgrading the offensive line this past offseason. The Bears welcomed two rejects from the Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Rams as if they were Pro-Bowl caliber offensive linemen. There was a lot to like from the Bears' offseason, but a failure to upgrade the offensive line will leave a lasting impression.
