2 OC hires that would signal Chicago Bears keeping Justin Fields, 1 that would not

The Chicago Bears will start to interview offensive coordinator candidates in the coming weeks. While it will have to be a specific fit due to the coaching staff in place, there are a lot of different options because the team could go in so many directions at quarterback.

While the coordinator hiring may not have a direct impact on whether the team keeps Justin Fields or not, two names would lead to Fields being an obvious keeper candidate, while one offensive coordinator would mean the Chicago Bears will move on.

3. If the Chicago Bears hired Greg Roman, they’d have to keep Justin Fields

If the Chicago Bears wanted to keep Justin Fields and continue with what his strengths are, the best option may be Greg Roman. Roman is most known for his work with Lamar Jackson in recent years. The Ravens did let Roman go, but he also was the coordinator when Jackson won the MVP in 2019.

Roman also worked with the Buffalo Bills when they had Tyrod Taylor, and he got his first big break in the NFL with Jim Harbaugh and the San Francisco 49ers. He turned Colin Kaepernick into a prolific dual-threat quarterback.

The issue with Roman is that in all three stops, he eventually got figured out, and the teams had to move on. However, in all three stops, he got the most out of a running quarterback, and those quarterbacks were at their best with Roman. It may be a short shelf life, but Justin Fields did not have a play-caller work around his skill set. Getting that for a few years while he continues to develop may help this roster in a big way.

Hiring Roman would mean that Justin Fields is here to say when you look at how he has handled similar quarterbacks in the past.

2. Would Tee Martin signal the Chicago Bears want Justin Fields to grow

Tee Martin is another interesting name that would almost certainly signal Justin Fields is staying at quarterback. Once again, that is because of his relationship with Lamar Jackson. The reality is that if you want to get the most out of Fields, they should be calling plays similar to what made Jackson so successful. So, why not steal the guys who were so open to this style and have obviously found success with it?

Tee Martin coached in college from 2009-2020. This is good in that he incorporates a lot of the new-age thinking that is coming into the game. However, since 2021, he has been with Lamar Jackson and the Ravens. He coached wide receivers for the last two years before being Lamar Jackson's quarterback coach.

While he has never called plays, there is a reason to get more excited about Martin than Roman. First, he worked with Roman, but now is working with Todd Monken. So, he saw how Roman worked with Jackson, but he also saw how Monken was able to take what Jackson learned and take it one step further. More than that, working in multiple positions gives him a view of the field. Martin would be young and exciting and would have experience with a good mobile quarterback. He also has more upside and a potential influence on improving the passing game with Justin Fields. If he were hired, it would be for Justin Fields.

1. If the Chicago Bears hired Kliff Kingsbury, it would not be for Justin Fields

One name who would not be hired for Justin Fields would be Kliff Kingsbury. Kingsbury is the former Arizona Cardinals head coach, and he was hired mainly for his offense. Now, he is the current senior offensive assistant and quarterbacks coach at USC. That is the first reason he would not be brought in to coach Justin Fields.

Kingsbury had a few offers after he was fired by the Cardinals but chose USC for Caleb Williams. He came into the Arizona Cardinals because he knew he got to draft Kyler Murray. Kliff Kingsbury will go only where there is a quarterback he wants. If that quarterback is once again Caleb Williams, you can expect to see Kingsbury interested in making the jump back to the NFL to coach him.

With that in mind, they would not hire him and then not draft Williams. That means that Fields would be gone. Most of the offensive coordinator candidates are not that tied to one quarterback, but Kliff Kingsbury is.
