NFL Owners are Winning the PR Battle

by NFL

The billionaires are winning over the millionaires and not just with their bank statements.  The owners also seem to be winning in the court of public opinion when it comes to the lockout.  I’m not sure if it’s because the NFLPA decertified on the brink of the deadline or what but the public generally seems to be siding with ownership.  I find it odd since we as fans don’t cheer for the McCaskeys or Jerry Angelo, we cheer for Brian Urlacher and Devin Hester.

I think part of the reason is that the owners have a bigger budget and can afford to take out full page ads like this one:

Owners generally don’t have Twitter accounts where they can post the first thing that pops into their heads at any given moment in time and put their collective feet in their mouths.  These guys didn’t get to be billionaires because they’re stupid.  They know business and they generally know how to deal with PR.  (Notice, I say generally and don’t necessarily lump the McCaskeys into that mix, but that’s a subject for another post).

Meanwhile, you’ve got players tweeting and giving interviews comparing being in the NFL to the slave trade.  The owners would like to thank Adrian Peterson for that nonsense.  Seriously?  This from a guy who will earn more next season (whenever that is) than most of us will earn in a lifetime?

The trade association formerly known as the NFLPA needs to circle the wagons and muzzle their guys.  They also need to drop some coin on a little PR campaign.  DeMaurice Smith comes off as arrogant and abrasive.  He needs a public personality makeover.

So who do you blame for the work stoppage?  Whose side are you on?  Vote in our poll and post your comments.

i look at it like this. the owners could find people to play with or without the players union. the players on the other hand, would have nowhere to go without them. the bottom line is that the owners are the boss. i am all in for adequate salary and player safety. they both need to realize that they need each other to be as successful as possible. it seems ridiculous to fight over 9 million plus a year. get it together guys!

BEAR DOWN!

correction. 9 billion... or trillion... i lost count

When people hear about the 9 billion dollar pie, its easy to write off and say the owners are so rich they could easily afford to share more with the players.
There are a few things I think about when I hear this type of mentality....
The first is that the owners are the one's who at some point or another put up personal investments (inherited, partnered, or otherwise) to own a professional football team. In my humble opinion, and based on that previous statement, I feel the owners are absolutely entitled to the Lion's share of the rake. The big name franchise players who draw wins as well as fans are going to get their salary as regardless, but it is these players have argued on behalf of all the guys making "league minimum." When did the league minimum become anything to complain about for a guy right out of college (usually) playing a sport?
It offends me to hear comments like "these players are risking it all for what they love."
Its not like they are fighting in the middle east or running into burning buildings here, they are playing a sport. You know, the type of thing a guy my age wishes he could do more of but he can't BECAUSE HE HAS A JOB!

The other thing I take issue with is that this money the owners make goes into individual franchise improvements. This is important because their are so many more underfunded franchises than their are over funded.
All football fans are losing in this situation, but the biggest losers are the fans of the Panthers and the Texans and Raiders of the world.

I'm with the owners. But no matter what happens, football is going to be a little less fun for the next couple years at least.

Can I vote neither? Or both?

I mean, you can say that the owners are getting enough money and if they are losing money it's due to their own poor money management. I mean hell, the NFL has it's own freaking Network. They are making money, they just want to make more.

But, on the other hand, that extra money to the owners could help greatly expand the franchise. And the players are essentially bitching about a pay cut that will get them 50 million instead of 60 million. Do they really need that extra 10 million? And if they do, then maybe they should work on money management as well.

So, when it comes right down to it, I vote for neither AND both. Confusing eh?

But, either way, we lose.

Great points Tom. I purposely didn't give an option besides players or owners because I want everyone to pick a lane. In the end, you're right, WE the fans lose.
