Will the Bears Trade Down (OR UP)???

facebooktwitterreddit

Brad Biggs is one of my guys.  Yesterday, Biggsy wrote a piece that included the possibility of the Bears moving UP in the draft if there was a guy there they liked.  Biggsy doesn’t say whether or not he buys into that notion.  I would submit to the class, that moving UP would be a bad idea and I have my reasons which you can see after the jump…

  1. The Bears have A LOT of holes to fill, especially on the offensive line.  We have to upgrade that quickly and moving up to get a PROSPECT on the O-line who might grade slightly higher than someone who will be there at #29 is too big of a risk.  I would rather have MORE draft picks so the Bears can throw the proverbial S**T at the wall to see what sticks.
  2. Angelo’s draft track record is not good.  As Biggsy points out in his article, “For every Knox, there are a half-dozen Dan Bauzins.”  I couldn’t agree more and I do not trust Angelo to be able to hit on more players with less picks.
  3. Moving up would cost too damn much.  There is a handy draft pick value chart which shows you how much each pick in the draft is worth.  For example, the Bears might want to move up to the middle of the 1st round to ensure a guy like Mike Pouncey, who could be the heir apparent to Olin Kreutz.  According to the value chart, this could cost the Bears their first and second round picks or their first and third this year along with a second rounder next year or some other combination.
  4. Related to #3, because of the possibility that this lockout will languish for a while, the impact ANY rookie is going to have is going to be diminished.  Rookies have a hard enough time coming into the league after all the OTAs, minicamps, training camp and whatnot.  Now imagine a rookie coming into the league with a lot less of that?  Scarier yet…imagine a rookie LT with that much less prep time being asked to protect Jay Cutler’s blind side?  Didn’t Jay take enough abuse last season?

My advice to Angelo…stay where you’re at or trade down to give yourself more chances to find a diamond in the rough or more coal that you will hope to sell us as a diamond…

CAN I GET AN AMEN?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
