Plaxico Burress Getting Out of Jail, Bears Should Enter Sweepstakes

Could Plaxico Burress catch on with the Bears?

Let the Plaxico Burress Sweepstakes get underway.  OK, we’ll have to wait until this stupid lockout ends and teams can start signing free agents, but besides that, Burress is getting out of jail on Monday and there is no reason that the Chicago Bears should not enter the sweepstakes to land the free agent wide receiver.

I know, it’s out of character for me to call for the Bears to go after a player with a checkered past but that’s how desperate I am for the Bears to get a legitimate #1 wide receiver.   It’s a glaring hole in Mike Martz’s offense.  Jay Cutler needs a security blanket and the likes of Devin Hester, Johnny Knox and Earl Bennett just aren’t getting the job done.  Jay needs a “go up and get it” guy and no one on the Bears roster fits the bill.

Burress hasn’t played any meaningful snaps since he was locked up 20 months ago.  From all accounts, he’s kept himself in good shape and has taken this situation seriously.   With a strong locker room with guys like Olin Kreutz, Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs, I think it’s a situation that could work.  You can’t argue with his talent; it’s what’s going on between his ears that matters.

Burress may have come at a discounted price given his past, but I suspect that teams will likely ante up big bucks, hoping to find more post-imprisonment Michael Vick-type lightning in a bottle.  The free agent market – whenever it opens – will be a feeding frenzy.   Here’s to hoping the Bears get into the mix for Burress.

Should the Bears go after Plaxico Burress?

BEAR DOWN!!!

Why in the world should we want this guy… Another trouble maker who has been out of football and working out for 2 years. Please stay away!

Why? I’ll give you 4 reasons why:

      1. Devin Hester
      2. Earl Bennett
      3. Johnny Knox
      4. Rashied Davis

Cutler needs a seasoned, big target wide receiver. While all of the Bears’ current receivers are good in their own right, none of them is going to grow 6″ overnight. Where was the Bears’ biggest problem area? RED ZONE. That’s where a big body, go up and get it guy will reap rewards.

Give him a break Greg…look at Vick. Plex did not hurt anyone but himself and he way more paid his responsiblity for his actions!!!!!!!!

What the hell…why not go after him. IMO, and maybe I’m in the minority here, but I could care less what players do outside the lines. If he can come in and produce…great. If he can’t, then get rid of him. Seriously, I mean look at our WR core…at best we have a bunch of #2′s and #3′s…the Bears do not and have not had a clear #1 WR since…well, shit…I’m 39 years old and I cannot recall ever having a #1 WR.

Again, IMO, we finally have a QB with an arm. You can say what you want about him mentally, or his facial expressions or even the NFC Champ game. But when you get down to it…this kid has a serious arm and no (that’s zero, nada) ‘go-to’ WR. The simple fact is if it’s 4th and 6, who of our current WR’s do you feel 100% (even 80%)can run a 7-yard out pattern and ‘go get the ball’? (That’s assuming the O-line could actually block for more than 3-4 seconds).

Okay, I think I’m done with my Monday rant (and the season has even started). Guess I’m still having some issues fromt he NFC Champ game. When it gets down to it, at least for me, I’m just growing tired of the Bears trying to pass off a shit sandwhich as steak.
