Bears Mauled in 24-13 Loss to Detroit Lions

That. Was. UGLY! The Bears looked like an undisciplined, unprepared bunch of rookies rather than a veteran group that was supposed to be used to playing under the bright lights of a national spotlight.   The Lions beat the Bears up on both sides of the ball for a 24-13 win en route to their first 5-0 start since the days of the Model T.

This was a failure on all levels of the organization.  Just to give you a glimpse into how pathetic the Bears offense was, they had 3 false starts in their first 5 snaps.  That is just miserable.  How do you prepare for a week, knowing full well that Ford Field was going to be out of control and not have something in place to prevent false starts right out of the gate?  That’s 100% coaching.  How can the offense be so undisciplined to commit 9 false start penalties?  NINE?!?!!!!  That’s coaching.  That’s Tice.  That’s Martz.  That’s Lovie.

How does a defense predicated on limited big plays allow a 73 yard bomb to the Lions’ best offensive weapon, who goes by the nickname of Megatron?  How does a defense designed to control gaps allow an 88 yard run to a middling running back going untouched?  Untouched!

The Bears were manhandled on both sides of the ball.  The Lions kept them on their heels and kept bringing in playmakers – draft picks – while the Bears trotted out undrafted free agents and other teams’ castoffs.  That’s 100% on Jerry Angelo.  How do you continue to trot Frank Omiyale out there at right tackle when all he seems to be good at is false starting?  I’ll tell you why – because they have no one else.  That’s on Jerry Angelo.  That’s years of unproductive drafts.  The cupboard is bare.  There is no depth on this team.  That is on Jerry Angelo.

Kellen Davis had a natural false start hat trick – that’s 3 in the first quarter.  He tried to make up for it with a couple of nice catches including a touchdown reception.  Raise your hand if you think he’s better in any phase of the game than Greg Olsen.  Didn’t think so.

Chris Harris made his return, but looked to be a step slow and had a bad game.  He let Calvin Johnson get behind him on the TD bomb and didn’t prove to be much of a last line of defense on Jahvid Best’s 88 yard touchdown run.

I have to give credit to a couple of Bears on offense – Cutler and Forte.  Both played well given the chaos that surrounded them.  Forte racked up 116 yards on the ground and another 35 in the air.  Cutler went 28/38 for 249 and a TD with no INT’s.  He showed good pocket presence and made plays when there weren’t many plays to the be had.

Sitting at 2-3 and looking up at a pair of undefeated teams, the division is in serious doubt, but with Wild Card contenders like Tampa, who got destroyed by San Fran yesterday, the Giants and Redskins, neither of which is any good, the playoffs are not out of reach.  Time to circle wagons and regroup and go on a run.  With very winnable games coming up against the Vikings and Bucs, the Bears need to figure out what’s going on and make the necessary adjustments to stop the bleeding and settle down.

That’s enough for now. I’m gonna sleep on this one and see if any big revelations come to me overnight.
