Bears OC Mike Martz Interested In Arizona State Head Coaching Job

Reports are starting to circulate that Chicago Bears Offensive Coordinator Mike Martz is interested in the recently vacant Arizona State head coaching job.  Arizona Republic reporter Doug Haller tweeted the info earlier on Tuesday after ASU head coach Dennis Erickson was let go on Monday.  Martz was an assistant at ASU for ’83-’91.

Martz is a free agent after this season, having turned down an extension from the Bears in the offseason.  It’s been widely speculated that Martz was only using the Bears OC job as a stepping stone to get back in control with a head coaching gig.  I didn’t figure it would be in the college ranks but no one has been breaking down the Bears door for Martz’s services.

If Martz does depart, it would likely mean another new offense for Jay Cutler to learn.  I’ve heard some rumblings that Mike Tice might be in line to take over as OC if he doesn’t depart for greener pastures himself.

Based on some of the Twitter chatter, it doesn’t seem like Bears fans are too up in arms if Martz departs.  Based on some of his play calling, I would tend to agree.  Martz was never a good fit for the Bears and was a desperation hire because no one wanted to take the job for a lame duck Lovie Smith.  Given the Bears’ rebound the last couple of seasons, the job stability of Lovie and Jerry Angelo and Jay Cutler’s emergence this season, the Bears’ OC job is actually a pretty desirable gig.

What do you think if Martz departs?  Good for the Bears?  Bad for the Bears?  Who cares?  Let’s hear your comments.
