Chicago Bears Fans/Analysts React to the Kyle Long Selection

The start of the 2013 NFL Draft certainly could have been considered the best reality show of the year. A lot of questions starting from the No. 1 pick surrounded this years draft. With the 20th pick in the draft, the Chicago Bears selected Oregon offensive lineman Kyle Long. Instead of giving you a bunch of tweets with obscenities, here are some tweets mixed from respected Chicago voices and more.

Not surprisingly, I saw plenty of tweets along this lines….”WTF. Who is Kyle Long?” On that note, I will say look him up before you send a moronic tweet. If you knew the players and prospects, you knew Kyle Long, who had a standout combine performance. Do I love the pick of Long at 20? No. But I certainly don’t hate it. I know that Tyler Eifert had serious talent, but I couldn’t wrap by head around acquiring three tight ends in the offseason when we have so many other needs. Bears fans shouldn’t complain about getting an offensive lineman, it’s what we need right? Yes, there is some questions about off-the-field issues, but that DUI and arrest happened BEFORE Oregon. I’m going to hold my judgments until the season. But, I really want him to lose that earring.

Bears fans, what do you guys think?

This was a HORRIBLE pick. 1) He was projected as a late 2nd rnd / 3rd round guy, who was probably gonna be there for their second round selection. 2) He is definitely NOT the best athlete available, and is in fact a HUGE project with limited experience just playing the game of football. 3) Guard may have been an area of need, but put it in perspective: Is a 4 game starter definitively better than Carimi? Even Wisconsin Center Frederick would have been a better selection than this (not to mention ANY of the next 10 picks). Emery now has a track of trying to be the “surprise guy” instead of the smart one.

Why is nobody addressing what Ive heard is a history of injuries? I like the pick as far as addressing the O-line, but with Ogletree, Trufant, and a host of quality day 1, non project, out of the box starters available to fill other clear needs the Bears have right there for the taking…I just dont see the value. It seemed like Emery got upset nobody would trade for the pick so just said “f*ck it” and took the 2nd round pick. I hope we dont see him taking his third round choice with his 2nd round pick. Time to get back on track.

I definitely agree with a lot of these points. Long was not the best player available at No. 20. I think Emery could have gotten away with getting Te’o or Ogletree at 20, then Long with the second round pick. He’s a project, yes. I’m saying have a little faith. If Matt Flynn could have one start in the NFL and get the attention he did, I think Long might have a chance.

It really does feel like a reach, but I have faith in Phil. Especially if these drafts form the new nucleus of this franchise. Remember KC has a lot of talent and Emery is partly responsible for rebuilding that franchise. Still, there was SO MUCH TALENT available at #20. Olgetree, Floyd, Trufant, smh

I think Matt Flynn can garner NFL attention because he performed well at LSU, then sat in Green Bay behind Rodgers and executed masterfully whenever called upon. That consistency of coaching and developed player is worth NFL teams looking at. Long doesn’t have that resume, but he does have the pedigree and can obviously be a player in this league. I’ve got faith, but like Boomer said I think Emery could have traded down, picked up an extra pick and still grabbed Long.

when did we become the new Bengals as far as the draft goes? Long may be a great player some day but he wasn’t worth our 1st pick. I’m thinking Emery was going to move down and Long was our 2nd rd pick. But when no one called to ask the Bear if they wanted to move down and the O-linemen were all gone, they PANICKED! and took Long thinking he would be gone when they originally wanted to pick him. Barrett Jones from Alabama would have been a better pick. Hopefully the rest of the picks will save this draft. Might be wrong on Long. He could be a stud. If he causes the Bear to cut Webb, i’ll be happy with the pick!
