Memorial Day is a day to remember our veterans past and present that have sacrificed for our great country.  The Bears not only are a storied franchise on the football field but some of their all-time greats served our country especially during World War II.

George “Papa Bear” Halas served in both World War I and II and was awarded the Navy Distinguished Public Award for his service in Admiral Nimitz fleet this at the age of 46, Halas was one of six NFL owners to serve in World War II (NFL Hall of Fame)

Hall of Famer Sid Luckman was part of the Merchant Marines but was allowed to return to the Chicago Bears for game day, but he was in Normandy on D-day on a transport ferry (Chicago Sports Memories)

Hall of Famer George McAfee prime years were during his military service  from 1941-1945 (Windy City Gridiron)

The only Bear to serve our country and not return was Young Bussey he and along with 25 other NFL players (20 during World War II) have given the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom (The Cold Hard Facts)
