We decided to do a countdown to the Chicago Bears season opener on September 8th versus the Cincinnati Bengals.  Thanks to one of our Twitter followers,se decided to combine the countdown with a roster preview of sorts.

We’re Brian Urlacher days away from the start of the Bears season.  It will be the first time since 1999 that someone other than Urlacher will be starting at middle linebacker.  Go ahead and dust off your Y2K survival kits if you dare!

It’s going to be strange without Urlacher roaming the middle of the field for the Beloved, but we’ve eulogized his illustrious career long enough.  It’s time to turn the page and look forward.  As Da Coach famously said, “the past is for cowards and losers.  If you live in the past, you die in the past.”   It’s time for Jon Bostic to take the torch and move the legacy of great Bears middle linebackers.

I don’t think anyone will be donning the #54 any time soon for the Bears.  Mike Singletary’s #50 just finally got dusted off nearly two decades after he patrolled the middle of the field for the Bears.  The next time we see Urlacher at Soldier Field will likely be in a ceremony honoring him and his contributions to the Bears.

I’m glad the Bears and Urlacher will able to part on good terms.  His unceremonious departure left a bad taste in my mouth, until he announced his his retirement and saved the relationship with the team.  You’ll still see plenty of #54’s in the stands for years to come.

We’re 54 days from kickoff.  Are you ready???
