Countdown to Kickoff… Sid Luckman Days Until Chicago Bears Season Opener

We decided to do a countdown to the Chicago Bears season opener on September 8th versus the Cincinnati Bengals.  Thanks to one of our Twitter followers, we decided to combine the countdown with a roster preview of sorts.

We’re Sid Luckman days from the start of the Bears season.  Not too many Bears have donned the #42.  In fact, Sid Luckman is the only Bears to ever wear that jersey.

Luckman played for the Bears from 1939 – 1950 and holds most of the Bears passing records.  Yes, you read that right.  Most of the Chicago Bears passing records date back to the 1940’s, an era of football where running was featured.  Papa Bear Halas scouted Luckman from his days at Columbia and traded for him to anchor the new T formation offense he wanted to implement.  For you youngsters out there it was basically the Wildcat before the Wildcat.

Luckman holds records for passing yards (14,686), Touchdowns (137) and Interceptions (134).  Expect Jay Cutler to pass the yardage record this season, as he currently has 12,292 yards.  The touchdown record is a longshot as Cutler only has 82 passing TD’s with the Bears and only has 63 INT’s as a Bear.

It says something about the Bears franchise that their leading passer served as a merchant marine during World War II.  If things go right with Marc Trestman, expect Cutler to hold all the Bears prominent passing records.

We’re 42 days away.  Are you ready???
